UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' ALFRED SAVILL TOMKINS, OF MARK LANE, LONDON, ENGLAND.
COMBINED TENT AND WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 355,231, dated December 28, 1.886.
Application filed July 13, 1886. Serial No. 207,933. (No model.) Patented in England December 7, 1885, No.14,993; in Belgium July 10, 1886, No. 73,801; in Italy August 18,1886, XL, 173, and in India August 24, 1886, N0. 133-86/L057.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED SAVILL TOM- KINs, a citizen of England, residing at Mark Lane, in the city of London, England, have invented a new-and useful Combined Tent and Wagon, (for which I have obtained patents in the following countries: Belgium, dated July 10, 1886, No. 73,804; Italy, dated August 18, 1886, XL, 173; India, dated August 24,
1886, No. 133-86/ 1,057, and have made application for patent in Great Britain, dated December 7, 1885, No. 14,993,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a combination of a tent and wagon or vehicle in such a manner that the wagon not only serves to transport the tent as well as men or goods from place to place, but also, when stationary, it
acts instead of tent-poles and ridge-pieces to supportthe tent-roof. By this arrangement no space is required for accommodating tent-- poles and ridge-pieces or the necessary ties and stays, the weight of the parts 'is saved, the accident of any of them being lost or mislaid is avoided, time in pitching and striking the tent is GCOIlOlDlZd, men can almost immediately on halting receive shelter and can enjoy it almost up to the moment of the wagon starting, the wagon can be packed or unpacked under cover, and when the tent is pitched it affords greater accommodation than any tent which has equivalent weight and bulk for transport.
I will describe the arrangement of a com- 5 bined tent and wagon according to my invention, referring to the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 is a side view; and Fig. 2 is an end view showing the wagon in condition for traveling, with the tent packed up upon it. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section.
verse section, and Fig. 5 is a side view showing the tent as pitched for occupation.
A is the wagon, which may have a complete tilt-roo or may have merely the open frame- 5 work of a tilt, as indicated at B in Fig. 3. The canvas or other fabric of thetent is spread over this roof or frame-work. During the Fig. 4 is a transmovement of the wagon this fabric is folded up in rolls 0 at each side, and in rolls D at each end, secured by straps E. For the purpose of forming a tent, the fabric is unrolled and spread out at the sides and ends, and its edges are secured to the ground by pegs F. The end pieces, D,of the fabric are made separate from the side pieces, 0, and may be most conveniently made eachin two separate pieces, which can be folded up into the two rolls D, one on each side, orthey may be partly or 'wholly rolled or folded up at the ends of the roof, as indicated in dotted lines D at Fig. 2. When the tent is closed, the edges of those pieces may be secured together by buttons or by lacing, as indicated at G, Fig. 5. Either end piece or pair of end pieces of fabric may be held up, as indicated by the dotted lines o D in Figs. 3 and 5, by uprights H, to form an entrance.
Through the roof of the wagon or tent there may be suitable apertures for chimneys or for ventilation.
Havingthus described the nature of my invention and the best-way I knowfor carrying the same out in practice, I claim- In combination with a wagon, A, having a tilt-roof or the frame-work B thereof, side and end rolls, 0 and D, of canvas or other suitable fabric, carried by the roof or frame-work, and when unrolled forming the sides and ends of a tent-roof, with side and end straps E, securing these rolls when folded up, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this lst day of July, A. D.
