Description

JOHN BAILEY AND JOHN DECAMP, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,680, dated April 3, 1860.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOI-IN BAILEY and JOHN DnoAMr, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and we do hereby declare that the following is a` full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, and in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of the bed bottom, with all its parts arranged and prepared for the reception of the bed or mattress. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view, showing the arrangement of the springs, slats, and the securing straps. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bed bottom lshowing, the construction of a portion of the spring, as being adapted to the peculiar mode of securing the same.
(A) represents the longitudinal side pieces of t-he bottom; (B) are transverse pieces framed into the pieces (A) so as to form the frame of the bottom.
(D) are conical, coiled wire springs, their lower ends (d) being suitably bent for insertion into the pieces (B), as shown in Fig. 3, and their upper ends ((Z) being bent so as to form a bearing for the slats (O) and for insertion into the loops (o) of the straps (E) are straps, passing through slots (a) of slats Around the ends (d) of springs (D), and through slots (o) of side pieces (A), to the transverse pieces (B) to which they are firmly secured as shown in Fig. 2. Proper tension being given to the straps (E), the elasticity of all the springs (D) will be so combined that pressure or weight upon any portion of the bed bottom will be made to act upon all said springs, thereby securing the comfort of the person reclining thereon, and preventing too much depression at any one point of the bed bottom.
)Ve do not claim the employment of spiral, or coiled wire springs, as we are aware that they are in common use for like purposes, neither do we claiin broadly1 the combination of springs slats and straps; but
Having described our invention, what we do claim as new of our own invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The arrangement of the side rails A, transverse rails B, springs D (Z el', slats O and straps E, the whole being constructed and combined in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony of which we hereunto set our hands.
JOHN BAILEY. JOHN DEOAMP.
