Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS C. BISBEE, OF ROCHESTER, NEIN YORK.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,924, dated August 2, 1859.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRUS O. Bienne, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Spring Bed-Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l, is a vertical section, showing the arrangement of the several parts. E ig. 2, is a plan of a portion of the bottom. Figs. 3, 4, and 5, show the collars M full size.
The nature of my invent-ion consists in the application of the head and foot rollers J, from which are suspended the slats D, they being riveted to the straps Y, which pass over the rollers and are hooked to pins in the under side, and the springs P and P, the cords Il and R. and the cams B and B. The slats D are suspended by being riveted to the straps Y which pass over the rollers J, and are hooked to the pins which are driven into the under side of the rollers for that purpose. These straps may be made of leather, webbing, or rubber. The rollers are held to the bedstead by the collar INI, its pivot IV, being inserted into t-he post. The springs P and P are fixed to the side rail at V by a screw or staple. The cords R and R are hooked to the spurs F, thus connecting the rollers and springs. The rollers are prevented from turning in the collars, by having the end slotted to fit the diametrical web, or rib, C. The cam B on the head roller is made longer and more eccentric than t-he other, so as to increase theleverage of the spring P in proportion to the extra weight resting upon that end of the slats. It will be seen that a pressure upon either slat, sutlicient to turn the rollers, will allow all the others to move down also, so that a large and small person may occupy the same bed without any previous arrangement, or adjustment of the springs, &c.
This bottom is applicable to nearly every variety of bedstead now in use.
I claiml. The arrangement herein described, of the slats D, belts Y, rollers J, cords R and R, and springs P and P', in the construction of spring bed bottoms.
2. I also claim the unequal cams B and B, for the more perfect automatic-adjustment of spring beds.
CYRUS C. BISBEE.
Witnesses Riom). RICKTEN, LOUIS ERNST.
