Description
UNITED srA'rEs rAENr oEEIcE.
I-I. R. GRAMPTON, OF LOGKPOR'I, NEXV YORK.
BED-BOTTOM SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,049, dated September 18, 1860.
T o all whom 'it may concern:
`Be it known that I, H. R. CRAMrToN, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed- Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing and arranging the several parts of this bed substantially in the manner hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings Figure l r-epresents an end view. Fig. 2 represents a plan View. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
In the figures n, n, seen in Fig. l, and in dotted lines, Fig. 3, represent a series of slats, which form as it were the foundation of the bed, said slats being placed a short distance apart, and crosswise of the bed are secured together by means of the lower binders s, s. The springs m, m, (which are coiled wire) rest upon these slats, the ends of the springs being secured in them, to keep them in proper position.
c, c, a, represent a series of slats which form the top of the bed. Said slats are secured and connected together by means of the binders c, c, which run across them as represented in Fig. 2. The slats a, a, are constructed of wood and are made to spring to accommodate themselves to pressure placed upon them. d, (Z, represent straps which connect the slats u, n, to the top spring slats a, a., a, at their ends.
The springs m, mf, resting upon slats n, n, press against the bottoms of slats a., c, and keep the straps CZ, (Z, tightly stretched when the bed is not in use.
This bed is divided in two parts as shown in Figs. 2, and 3, said parts being connected together by means of hinges c, e, which are secured to the binders c, c.
Head rests D, and E, (being of different heights) are secured under the head part of the bed in order to raise or lower that portion of said bed as circumstances may require. The binders c, c, are made elastic, as seen in Fig. 3.
By this arrangement7 it will be observed that when pressure is placed upon the bedfor instance, at .cc-the binder c, from m to m, will assist in supporting it at that point being themselves supported by the slats c, a, over them, and by the springs under said slats. So if pressure is aplied at x, the binders c, from m to a2, and from e, to e, will assist in supporting it, being themselves supported by the slats and springs as represented.
c, represents that portion of the binder upon the head of the bed, and it will be clearly seen that as th-e two parts are hinged together the same rule ust spoken of will apply. Then pressure is applied to the head piece or near the joint one portion of the binder will support the other. Thus the slats and binders are secured together in such a manner that they support each other, being themselves sustained by the springs.
I do not claim the parts of this bed separately and distinctly considered; but
Having thus Jfully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The spring slats c, a., the binders c, c, and s, s, the end straps d, c7., the springs fm, m, and the bottom slats n., n., the binders c, c, being hinged as represented and the several parts constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
H. R. CHAMPION.
