UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ATKIss'oF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR PLOTTING SOAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,326, dated April 24, 1883. Application filed J arinary 16, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES ATKISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Plotting Soap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of machines for which Letters Patent of the United States were'granted to me January 24, 1882, No. 252,711; and it consists iii the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a similar section of the delivery-spout and its attachments. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof, looking from an inward direction.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the cylinder of the machine, which may be either single or double, and which is provided with a feed-hopper, B, and plunger 0, the latter being connected in the proper manner with a crank-shaft, D, to which a revolving motion is imparted by suitable gearing.
To the outer-end of the cylinder A is secured the delivery-spout E, both the cylinder and spout being provided with attaching-flanges f, and between the cylinder and spoutis interposeda head, G, in form of a grating, which serves to divide or distribute the soap uniformly as it leaves the cylinder, whereby it is hardened. This distributinghead G is composed ofljintersecting bars sand a circular rim, 1., and said bars are preferably beveled to a sharp edge in the direction of the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2, to facilitate the passage of of the soap.
For the purpose of retaining the head G in its position, I provide the. same on one edge with an outwardly-projecting flange, i, which is fitted intoa recess, k, of the spout, flush; with its inner or receiving end, such flange having a larger diameter than the interior of thecylinder A, so that when the spout is fastened the flange overlaps the outer end of the cylinder, while the body of the head is received within cylinder; hence the flange i is firmly held or confined in the recess k, and no extraneous devices are required for securing the distributing head.
The shape of the bar whichis formed as the soap issues from the delivery-spent E is determined by a die, H, which is held in positionthrough the medium of a flanged screw-ring, J, fitte'l to an external screw-thread, :10, at the outer end of the ,spout, the die being interposed between the flange of said ring and the spout. By this arrangement the die H can be readily removed, as for the purpose of substituting therefor one of different shape. If two cylinders are used, two hoppers and two delivery-spouts must be provided.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,,is
l. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, with the cylinder A, of the deliveryspout E and thedistributing-head Gr, interposed between the cylinder and spout.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, with the eylinderAand delivery-spout E. of the interposed distributinghead formed of the intersecting bars 8 and circular rim t.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the delivery-spout E, the distributing-head G, having the outwardlyprojecting flange i on one edge titted into a recess of the spout flush with its inner or receiving end, and the cylinder A, having the spout secured to its outer end, with the flange of the distributing-head overlapping such end.
4. The combination, snbstantiatly as hereinbefore described, of the delivery-spout having an external screw-thread at the outer end, the flanged screw-ring J, fitted to such thread, and the die H, interposed between the flange of said ring and the spout.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ATKISS. [L. s.]
