WILLIAM \VATSON, OF BISHOPVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWSl Specification forming` part of Letters Patent No. 27,490, dated March 13, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WATSON, of Bishopville, in the county of Sumter and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plow constructed after my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section ot' the same.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of the pivoted clamping-hookplate, fastening wedge, standard, and moldboard, substantially as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the beam of the plow. 1t is furnished. with the handles in the usual manner.
B is the standard. Its upper termination is extended horizontally in a manner to serve as a brace. This extended portion of the standard is inserted into the beam A, so that its face may be flush with the side of the same, and thus afford more strength. Another brace, C, made in a semicircular form, is pivoted at one of its ends to the extended end of the standard at theback part of the beam A, and extends down below the bottom of the beam A, and is pivoted nearits center to the standard B, and at its other end to the beam of the plow. This brace,in connection with the brace formed by the continuation of the standard, etectually retains the standard in position. The beam A may be braced on both sides.
D is the mold-board of the plow. Itis constructed in the usual manner, with the exception of an open slot, a, and a closed slot cr hole, b.
The standard B has a slot,o,in it. A plate, E, is pivoted in the slotc of the standard,said plate being provided with a hook, d, on its lower end, which hook takes into the hole or slot b of the mold-board and contines it securely in place, the open slot a of the moldboard passing on each side of the plate E and serving as stops to prevent lateral movement in the mold-board. The plate E is also provided with an eye, c, on its upper end, into which a wedge, f, pivoted on the standard B above the plate, is forced, and serves to elevate the upper end of the hook-plate and depress the lower end of thesame, and thus cause the hook to take a rm hold upon the moldboard and retain it in place.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rJhe combination of the pivoted clampinghook plate E, fastening-wedgef, standard B,
and mold-board D, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
