AUGUSTUS T. GILLENDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. f
WALL MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.274,3l.0, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed December 19, 1882. (No model.)
Be it known that I, AUcUs'rUs T. GILLEN- York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wall Match-Safes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corcorresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure lis aperspective view of my improvement. the same.
The object of thisinvention is to provide wall match-safes constructed in such a manner as to receive a box of matches and expose the prepared side of the box for the matches to be ignited upon, while at the same time affording a receptacle for the partly-consumed matches.
A represents the back plate of the safe,
which is provided with holes A to receive the nails or serews by which the safe is secured to the wall.
Upon the forward side of the upper part of the plate A is formed a receptacle, B, open at the top, and of such a shape and size as to receive a box of matches. I prefer to make the receptacle B sufficiently large to allow the outer case, 0, of the box to be placed within it, and the inner case, 0, containing the matches, to be placed upon the said outer case, as illustrated in Fig. 2. I
In the forward side of the receptacle B is formed an, aperture, B, of such a shape and size as to allow a match to be inserted through it and drawn along the prepared surface of the outer case, 0, of the match-box, and thus ig Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of l the plate A is formed a receptacle, D, of such a size as to receive a box, E, for the matches to be placed in after being used.
In the bottom of the receptacleD is forme an aperture, D, through which a finger can be inserted to raise the box E, so that it can be removed and emptied when required.
The box E is made of metal, so that it will not be liable to be set on fire should a match be placed in it without being extinguished.
The safe can be made of metal, wood, or other suitable material.
With this construction the unused matches will always be in the upper receptacle :and the used or partly-burned matches in the lower receptacle, so that the user will not be liable to take a partly-burned match instead of an unused oue. Another advantage of this construction is that with each new box of matches there will be a fresh surface to ignite the matches upon, so that the matches can always be ignited readily.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. A wall match-safe made, substantially as herein shown and described, with asuspensionplate, A, having upon its upper partareceptacle, B, provided with a front opening, B, and a bottom opening, Bflaud upon its lower part a receptacle, D, provided with a bottom opening, D, as set forth.
2. A match-safe consisting of the plate A and. two top-open and bottom-closed. receptacles, B D, the latter placed one above the other, and. each provided with a hole in the bottom, whereby the contents of each receptaclemay be raised, so as to be taken hold of with the fingers, as described.
AUG. T. GILLENDER.
