SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,671, dated March 6, 1883. Application filed January 8, |883. (Model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. ELLIS, of Millington, in the county ot' Tnseola and State of Michigan, have invented certain new land 5 usei'ul Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference 1o heilig had to the accompanying drawing which form a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective view ot' the top part ot' a. barrel-churn provided with my iin- 15 provement, and Fig. 2 is a sectionalview ofthe' saine.

My invention has relation to fastenings for ze covers for barrel-chorus; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A z5 indicates the churn-barrel. andB the lid.

Upon the side ot' the barrel is fasteneda hail, C, ot' strap metal,into which the hooked end D of a curved arm, E, engages. The curved arm E passes from the hail up along 3o the side of the barrel, and is bentover the top ofthe barrel, forming a bulge, F, which bears against the lid. Passing through a longitudinal slot, G, in the end ot' the arm E, and engaging with its notched end H in a slot, I, at the inner side ot' the bulge F, is a curved arm, 35 J, to the outer downturned end of which, at O, is pivoted a bifurcated lever, K. The short ends L ot' this lever are slightly hooked and catch under the two lips M of a catch, N.

When it is desired to fasten thecover upon 4o the barrel, the hooked end D of arm E is caught in the hail C, and the notched end H ot' arm J inserted through slot G into slot I. The short hooked ends L are then brought to catch under the lips M, and the lever K is 45 turned down, pressing the cover rmly down upon the barrel, and holding` it there.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure b v Letters Patent of the United States- 5o In a barrel-churn, the barrel A, cover B, bail C, curved arm E, forming hook D and bulge F, and having slots Gand I. heilt arm J, having notched end H, hifurcated lever K, having hooked ends L, and catch N, having lips M, all 55 constructed and combined to operate substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
