Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. MCENALLY, OF CLEARFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER AND LETTER FILE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 27,302, dated February 28, 1860.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it knoWn that I, J. B. MCENALLY, of Clearfield, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Paper and Letter File; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXactdescription of the same, reference being had to the annexed draW- ings, making a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a vievv of my invention with a cord attached to the cylinder to retain the paper properly thereto. Fig. 2 is a vievv of ditto, showing t-he application of a Wire instead of a cord.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in attaching papers or letters to a cylinder by means of a hook or hooks secured thereto in such a Way, that they may be passed through the margins of the papers or letters at the folds; and using in connection With said hook or hooks, cords or rods, one passing inside of each paper or letter, and having their ends attached to the ends of the cylinder and retained in proper position by means of spiral terminals, substantially as hereinafter described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a cylinder which may be of Wood or other suitable material and of any length according to the size of the papers or letters to be filed, and to this cylinder a hook B, one or more, is attached. The hooks are of circular form, one end being attached to the cylinder, and the other end pointed, the hook extends nearly or quite around the cyl` inder, and concentric with it, and rather larger in diameter so as to leave a space betvveen the hook and cylinder.
The ends a of the cylinder A, are of spiral form, those shown in Fig. l, are cut of such form out of the cylinder but those shoivn in Fig. 2, are formed on the edges of metal tubes l), Which are fitted on the ends of cylinder A. The cylinder A in Fig. 1, has a pin or knob c secured to each end of it.
The papers or letters, one being shown in red are secured to the cylinder of Fig. l, as follows: The margin of the papers or letters at their folds have the hook B, passed through them, the papers or letters being turned around, on the hook t-ill the first are placed on it comes in contact With the inner end of the hook, and Within the fold of each paper or letter a cord el is placed, the hook passing over the cords and the ends of the latter being attached to the pins or knobs c. The cords d it will be seen keep the papers or letters snugly to the cylinder, andV the spiral ends a are inclined in such a direction that the ends of the cords cannot turn on the pins or knobs o to permit the papers or letters to pass off the hook B.
The arrangement in Fig. 2 is a mere trifling-variation of the plan shown in Fig. l. In Fig. 2 Wires or rods e are used instead of cords. The Wires are fitted in the folds of the papers or letters precisely in the same way as the cords d and the ends of the Wires are bent over the spiral edges of the tubes Z), the ends of the Wires passing into the ends of the tubes.
Although only one hook B is shown attached to the cylinder A, more may be used if desired, and the hook or hooks instead of projecting out from the surface of the cylinder in order that they may be passed through the margins of the papers or letters,
y may be fitted in grooves made circumferentially in the cylinder so as to be fiush or nearly flush with it. In this case the hook cannot pass over the cords or Wires as shown in Figs. l and 2, and each cord or Wire must be provided With a loop to pass through the fold of its paper or letter and be fitted on the hook.
The Within described invention is eX treme simple, efficient, and economical to construct, and the papers or letters may be readily adjusted to and detached from it.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The cylinder A, provided With the hook or hooks B, and spiral terminals a, in combina'- tion With the cords or Wires Z e being arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH B. MCENALLY.
