SHOPPING, TRAVELLING OR BEACH BAG Filed.Nov. 20, 1953 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A Tro/g/vE y5 United States Patent SHOPPING, TRAVELLING, OR BEACH BAG Werner Kepper, Mehlem-Godesberg, Germany Application November 20, 1953, Serial No. 393,449
2 Claims. (Cl. 150-1.7)
The invention relates to a shopping, travelling or beach bag, case or the like.
According to the invention, a part of the bag or pouch, preferablythe parts connected to the base of the bag or pouch, or the edge of the cover of the case or the like, is so arranged that it can be folded inwards to be retained in its folded position by a zipper fastener or a similar fastening device, whilst unfolded after opening and detaching the zipper fastener or the fastening device, the amount of interior space is increased.
In accordance with a further object of the invention a flap or the like, secured on one side, may be provided in the interior as a false bottom which covers up the folded part when the bag is shortened or when the case or pouch is reduced in size and, when the bag or the like is lengthened, may be either folded fiat against a side wall or detachably secured to the opposite wall by suitable attachment means, such as press studs, or the like, to form an intermediate compartment.
It is possible to manufacture the bag, pouch or case, including the extendable part, of the same material such as textile fabric, soft leather, artificial material or the like. However, it is advisable for the folding part to be manufactured from a material other than that of the remainder of the bag or the case.
In order to make the best possible use of the inside space it may be advisable to manufacture the folding part of especially thin material which may be easily folded up, for instance a net-like material.
The use of tucks, folds, or the like, on the folding part serve the same purpose, as they allow the material to be folded up as flat as possible.
An example of construction of the object of the invention is shown in various views in the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the closed bag,
Fig. 2 is a similar elevation with lengthening portion extended,
and,
2,729,257 Patented Jan. 3, 1956 'ice Fig. 4 shows a similar part section through the lengthened bag.
1 denotes the actual bag which is provided with a handle 2 and a zipper fastener 3 for opening and closing the inside space.
Near the base 4, a zipper fastener 5 is provided passing round the bag and which may be detached on one side so that the bag can be enlarged by unfolding the lengthening portion 6 as shown in Fig. 2, scoops 5a and 5b of the zipper-fastener 5 serving as ornamental strips.
As may be clearly seen from Fig. 3, when the bag is shortened, the lengthening portion 6 is folded inwards and can be covered by a false bottom 7 which is secured at 8 to a side wall, by a seam, for example.
As shown in Fig. 4 the false bottom 7 may be folded against one wall of the lengthening portion 6 when the bag is extended and can be secured there by means of one or more press studs 9.
However, it is also possible to secure the false bottom 7 in an approximately horizontal position, that is to say to the part 1 of the bag when the latter is extended, by correspondingly mounted stud portions so that an intermediate compartment is formed which can be used, for example, for receiving dirty washing or wet bathing clothing, whilst the upper part can accommodate utensils which do not come into contact with the contents of the lower compartment.
What I claim is:
l. A hand bag comprising a top portion and a foldable and extensible bottom portion, a first horizontal row of zipper scoops on the side of the bag adjacent the base of said top portion, a second horizontal row of zipper scoops adjacent the base of said bottom portion, and removable zipper fastener means for uniting said first and second rows of scoops upon folding of said bottom portion to bring the rows of scoops into fastening relationship.
2. A hand bag as in claim 1, further comprising false bottom flap means attached to an inner side of said top portion and stretchable over the folded bottom portion.
