Application September 10, 1947, Serial No. 773,105
1 Claim.
This invention relates to bags or flexible receptacles.
An object of this invention is to provide a bag which is designed for carrying soiled linen or the like and which is so constructed and arranged that it can be supported in open position from the back of a chair so that it can be conveniently filled, and when it is either completely or partially filled, the supporting band which half encircles the open end of the bag can be reversed and will then form a closure band which will firmly close the mouth of the bag so that it may be carried from the opposite end.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bag of this kind which includes a pair of pull tabs or loops within the upper portion of the supporting band which will facilitate the reversal of the band from a supporting position to a closure forming position.
To the foregoing objects, and others which 7 may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from the front of a bag constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a detailed front elevation of the bag when in closed position.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the manner of reversing the combined supporting band and closure from a supporting to a closing position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary vertical section of one of the upper corners of the bag, showing the reversing loop or tape.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals l0 and H designate the front and rear walls of a fabric or flexible bag which are secured together at their lower ends by stitching l2. The upper end of the bag is open and is adapted to be selectively closed as will be hereinafter described. The walls I 0 and II are secured together at 2 their opposite lengthwise edges by stitching l3 and Ill. The upper end of the front wall It! is formed with a hem l5 and the upper end of the rear wall H is formed with a hem it which is disposed on the inner side of the rear wall II as shown in Figure 4.
A combined supporting and closure forming band I! is secured at the opposite vertical edges thereof to the opposite lengthwise edges of the rear wall II and is also secured as by stitching l8 along the upper horizontal edge thereof to the upper portion of the rear wall ll adjacent the lower edge of the hem IS. The lower edge of the combined supporting band and closure forming member I! is also formed with a reverted hem IS. A pair of looped tapes 2|] are secured between the band I! and the rear wall II, and when the band I! is in bag supporting position as shown in Figure 4 the loops or tapes 20 will be disposed in dependent relation as shown in Figure 7.
When it is desired to close the open upper end of the bag, the hands are extended between the band I! and the rear wall ll, grasping the two loops 20 and pulling these loops downwardly.
This downward pulling of the loops 20 will effect a reversing of the band I! from the rear side H to the front side or wall Ill as shown in Figure 5. In the closure forming position of the band I! the hems l5 and IE will be disposed in downwardly extending position and will form a reinforcing means for the closed mouth or end of the bag.
The front wall ID has secured to the lower end thereof a carrying strap 2| so that when the band I! is in closure forming position the bag may be carried from the bottom of the ba by means of the strap 2|.
With a bag as hereinbefore described, the usual draw strings may be eliminated so that it will not be necessary to provide either eyes or tubular hems for the draw strings in order to close the u per end of the bag.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A bag comprising substantial y coextensive front and rear walls secured together along the bottom and opposite side edges thereof, the top edges of said front and rear wal s being downwardly, reverted to provide upper hems thereon, a combined supporting and closure band having the upper edge thereof fixed to the rear face of said rear wall along the bottom of the upper hem thereof, the opposite side edges of said band being secured to the opposite side edges of said.
rear Wall, and a pair of depending looped straps having the ends thereof fixed between said upper edge of said band at the opposite ends thereof and said rear wall with the loop portions of said straps depending adjacent said band and outside said bag, said straps providing a means for facilitating the reversal of the position of said band from a supporting position at the rear of said rear wallwithsaid upper hems upstanding to a closureforming positionforwardly of said front wall with said upper hems bent inwardly between said front and rear walls to stiffen the upper edges thereof.
