Application October19, 1951, Serial No. 252,164
1 claim. Cl. 132-79 The present invention relates to a cosmetic case presenting a compact arrangement for confining a number of cosmetic articles in a very small space so as to be easily carried in a womans purse.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a cosmetic container having a novel double hinge construction to increase the utility of the cosmetic case, and to provide the operable means for storing the articles that are contained within the case.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a cosmetic case having certain swingable panel units which will readily expose all of the articles within said case to the user for the latters selective needs.
It is still a further object of the present invention to provide a cosmetic case wherein the body structure thereof is fabricated from relatively thin gauge metal stock, plastic or other suitable material to noticeably reduce the total weight of the case and its associated parts. In this connection the compact container is reinforced in certain respects to adequately strengthen the same for the purpose of maintaining its original shape while being used. Furthermore, the reinforcing used also aids in maintaining the various operative elements of the case in working condition and eliminates binding or bending of the various parts.
Other objects and advantages relating to the cosmetic case of the present construction and invention shall hereinafter appear in the following detailed description having reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cosmetic case of the present invention with the cover thereof closed and all of the parts nested therein to be carried and used by a woman;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cosmetic case illustrated in Fig. 1 but showing the various swingable elements thereof in open position and ready for use;
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse cross sectional view taken substantially along the line 33 in Fig. 2 but with the swinging panel carrying certain of the cosmetic articles as shown to the left in Fig. 2 being rotated into closed position and with the cover thereof open; and
Fig. 4 is a detail cross sectional view of the left hand panel in Fig. 2 as seen from the upper end thereof.
The cosmetic case comprises a container 1 having a bottom 2 supporting front and rear side walls 3 and 4 and terminating with end walls 5 and 6 comprising an open box that is closed by a cover 7. The cover 7 is connected by means of a hinge 8 to the upper edge of the rear side wall 4 and is swingable from a full closed position as shown in Fig. l to an open position as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. This cover 7 is embossed as at 9 to carry a mirror 10 within the recess of the embossed portion thereof. The mirror 11) may be cemented or otherwise secured within the embossed cover so as to present a flat surface 11 upon the cover to face the open box when the latter is closed. The embossed 2 portion 9 together with the'rnirror 10 comprises adequate reinforcing means to prevent warping or weaving of the cover 7 during use.
A hinge 12 is connected with the upper forward side wall 3 of the cosmetic container 1 to swingably support a panel 13 for movement into the box opening and outwardly therefrom. A suitable ledge or projection 14 is formed as part of the 'fixed hinge structure 8 to stop the inward travel of the panel 13 when the same is moved into the position illustrated in Fig. 3.
I The panel 13 is provided with a double clip arrangement 15 suitably secured to the panel 13 and providing means for retaining a powder dispenser 16 and 'a lipstick container 17. The clip arrangement includes a central spring member 18 arranged for retaining the adjacent sides of both the dispenser 16 and container 17 with laterally outwardly disposed clip ends 19 and 20 being arranged for engaging the outer surfaces of the cosmetic articles 16 and 17.
The lipstick container 17 is of tubular form substantially as illustrated, but the powder dispensing unit 16 is preferably a tubular device substantially as shown and described in my copending application Serial No. 252,163 filed of even date herewith. The construction of this particular powder dispensing unit is one of the contributing factors lending considerably to the compactness and novelty of the arrangement of the present cosmetic case.
The panel 13 is preferably cut short at one end 21 to allow the dispenser 16 and lipstick container 17 to project free of the panel for access by the fingers. The other end of both of these cosmetic articles are suitably retained by a bracket such as 22 secured to the panel 13 and this bracket presents an opening such as 23 shown in Figs. 2 and 4 to receive the end portion 24 of the dispenser 16 to definitely position the adjacent end of the dispenser as shown in Fig. 2. Bracket 22 also provides a stop to lengthwise position the dispenser 16 upon the panel 13.
Bracket 22 also carries an overhanging lip or ledge 25 under which the end of the lipstick container 17 may be inserted to a position against the bracket 22 whereby the relative location of the container 17 upon the panel 13 is also determined. Panel 13 further includes a cut-out such as 26 to allow fingernail or finger access to swing the panel 13 out of the container from closed position.
The panel 13 also includes a further cut-out portion 27 \adjacent the hinge 12 which permits a latching clip 28 secured to the cover 7 to pass through such opening 27 and to engage underneath the rounded portion of the hinge 12. A slight cover extension 29 overhangs the front wall 3 of the box 1 to permit easy opening of the cover from closed position.
The general depth of the cosmetic case or container 1 is such as to permit storage space for a conventional powder puif 30, and a small cake of rouge 31 in the positions best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. As an additional utility, a pair of tweezers such as 32 may be held in place by a suitable clip 33 within the box adjacent the rear wall 4 thereof. Clip 33 also has an upwardly formed extension 34 to retain a small nail file 35 between such extension and the rear wall 4 of the box.
The front and back side walls 3 and 4 of the container or cosmetic case 1 are provided with a plurality of longitudinal ribs 36and 37 respectively to strengthen the box lengthwise, thereby adding rigidity and stability thereto. Preferably these ribs are used in pairs as shown in Fig. 1 to provide a finger grip area such as 38 therebetween lending to the convenience of the handling of the box and holdingthe same. The hinges 8 and 12 further reenforce the box or container in cooperation with the ribs 36 and 37.
The above description relates to a preferred embodiment of the compact cosmetic case of thepresent invention. It is to be understood, however, that certain changes and modifications may be made therein which shall be governed by the breadth and scope of the; appended claim directed thereto.
