ORMAND E. MELL ENNY, OF PARSONS, KANSAS.
MANUFACTURE OF SHOES OR GAITERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.272f1 52, data February 20, 1883.
- Application filed December 35, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORMAND E. MELLENNY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Parsons, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Shoes or Gaiters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective View of a gaiter made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a verticalcentral section of the same; Fig. 3, a plan view of the upper, showing the manner of cutting it; and Fig. 4:, a back or rear view of the gaiter.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvementsin the manufacture of boots, shoes, or gaiters, and refers more particularly to the manner of forming or cutting the upper, whereby a great economy of material is obtained, as Wellas rendering the boot or shoe much neater in appearance, stronger, and durable, and more easily made,-
and also attaching to the upper both a boxand counter of sole-leather, thus placing in the market for the trade an upper having a durable box and counter readyto be made into a boot, shoe, or gaiter, as desired.
In the accompanying drawings, the, upper, as
' represented more clearly in Fig.3, is cut so as to form a fore part, A, having the extensions B. The upper is so cut from one single piece of leather as to form the vamp D, with its side extensions, E, said vamp joining the fore part, A, by the strip (3. As will be seen by 'reference to Fig. 1, the extensions B to the fore part, A, are brought down and around to form the rear side portions of the gaiter, while the strip 0 extends along down the instep, and the extensions E of the vamp ,D form the sides of the forward portion of the gaiter.
The open spaces that would be the result of bringing the extensions 13 E in proper position to form the gaiter are covered by the inner sections a, stitched to the inner or under sideof the upper, as shown.
It will be observed that the manner of cutting the upper results in a great saving of material, as, with the exception of the' sections or and box-toe and counter, hereinafter described, the entire upper is formed from a single piece of material, thus insuring a A, tongues b, extensions B, central strip, 0
quently less danger of ripping, while the cost of manufacture is materially reduced. The sides of the fore part, A, are cut with tongues 12, for fastening thereto suitable buttons, 0, and with the button-holes d between each tongue,
I greater durability, for the reason that aless number of pieces are necessary, and consethe buttons on one side of the fore part, A,
being arranged on a line directlyopposite their respective button-holes on the opposite side of the fore part, so that they will button, as shown in Fig. 4; The buttons 0, being secured to the tongue b, instead of forming the buttonholes in the tongues, form a much stronger fastening for the gaiter, with less liability of the button-holes tearing out.
If desired, an inner strip or section 6 may be, used, against which the buttoned portion of the gaiter is brought in contact to prevent it from coming in contact with the stocking of the foot.
The counter F and box G are formed of sole-leather, and are connected to the upper .by inserting the edge of the latter in a slit formed in the sole leather, and afterward stitching them together, thus producing for the trade an upper complete, with a durable counter and box of solid soleleather, ready to be used by the boot and shoe maker.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is, a 1. A blank for a boot or shoe upper, formed of a single piece of leather, and cut in the manner described to form the fore part, A, with tongues b, the extensions B, central strip, 0, and vamp D, with side extensions, E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a boot or shoe upper consisting of the fore part,
9 and the vamp D, with side extensions, E, the whole cut from a single piece of leather, and having the sections a and the solid soleleather counter. F and box G connected to the ICC upper, substantially as and for the purpose ORMAND E. MELLENNY.
