2 Claims. (Cl. 150-29) This invention relates in general to improved articles of jewelry, and more particularly to an improved handbag fastener.

The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved handbag fastener which is detachable and adaptable to several handbags enabling the handbag fastener to be used with a bag harmonizing with the dress or other article of clothing of ladies utilizing the handbag.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved handbag fastener which includes two articulated limbs pivotally connected together for internesting, the

shape of the two limbs as designed is not limitative in regard to the invention, but any other shape might be covered by this invention, the limbs being provided at spaced intervals along their limbs with clips which are removably securable to the top edge of the material of a bag.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved handbag fastener which is detachably connected to a bag whereby bags may be interchangeably connected thereto, the handbag fastener being connected to the bag by a plurality of clips carried by depending ears on articulated limbs of the handbag fastener, the clips being passable through eyelets in the bag and being selectively urged either to a closed or open position by spring means, the direction of urging of the spring being identical with the position of the associated clip.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved handbag construction which includes a handbag fastener detachably secured to a bag, the handbag fastener being highly ornamental and preferably of a precious metal, the bag carried by the handbag fastener being replaceable whereby the handbag fastener may be utilized with numerous bags, the bags being intended to match the clothing of the lady carrying the handbag.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a side elevational view of the handbag fastener which is the subject of this invention and shows the same relative to a bag, only a portion of the bag being shown, the remainder of the bag having its outline only shown by broken lines;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevational view of a central portion of the handbag fastener and shows an associated clip thereof in a closed position;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged elevational view similar to Figure 2 and shows the clip in an open position; and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken through substantially the center of the handbag fastener of Figure 1 and shows the articulated limbs thereof in open position, the clip of one of the limbs being shown in a closed position while the clip of the other limbs being shown in an open position.

2,711,203 Patented June 21, 1955 Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated an improved handbag construction which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 10. The handbag construction 10 includes an improved handbag fastener which is referred to in general by the reference numeral 12 which has secured thereto for replacement a bag 14.

The handbag fastener 12 includes a pair of articulated limbs which are referred to in general by the

16 and 18. The limb 16 is generally of an inverted channel shaped cross-section, as is best illustrated in Figure 4 and includes a pair of spaced

parallel flanges

The articulated limb 18, likethe limb 16 is of a generally inverted channel shaped cross-section and includes a pair of spaced parallel flanges 26 and 28 which are connected at their upper edges by an integral web portion The articulated

16 and 18 are pivotally connected at their lower ends by pivot means (not shown) and are generally arcuate in outline. It will be understood that the articulated limb 18 is of a slightly lesser radius than the articulated limb 16 so that the articulated limb 18 may be internested within the articulated limb 16 within the confines of the extension of the web 24.

Carried by the innermost flange of each of the articulated limbs 16 and 13 are integrally formed depending ears 32. The ears 32 are disposed in spaced relation along the lengths of their respective articulated limbs and have their lower ends rolled as at 34. Passed through the lowerrolled ends 34 of the ears 32 are axles 36.

The rolled lower ends 34 of the cars 32 are bifurcated in the manner best illustrated'in Figure 3 and mounted on the axles 36 between the bifurcated lower ends 34 are rolled ends 38 of arcuate clips 40.

46 and 48. The spring element 50 engages the shoulder 48 when the clip 40 is in a closed position to retain the same in a closed position and engages the back of the clip 40 when the clip 40 is in open position to retain the same 'in an opened position, as is best illustrated in Figure 4.

The bag is provided with a plurality of spaced eyelets 52 adjacent the upper edge thereof. The eyelets 52 are spaced in the same relation as are the clips 40 and when the clips 40 are in their open positions, the eyelets 52 The clips 40 are then moved to their'closed positions whereby the bag 14 is detachably secured to the handbag fastener 12.

It will be understood that the bag 14 may be made of many different materials having different colors and if desired the bag 14 may be made in different shapes. It is understood that the various types of bags, when provided with an upper portion corresponding to the upper 3 portion of the bag 14 illustrated in Figure 1 may be detachably secured to the handbag fastener 12. By providing a plurality of replacement bags 14 for the handbag fastener 12, it will be seen that a lady may have numerous bags which include expensive handbag fee In view of the foregoing, it will be seen that there has E been illustrated and described a novel handbag fastener which may be in the form of expensive jewelry and which may be utilized with interchangeable bags so that the same together with the interchangeable bags may form a plurality of handbags which will match the particular clothing being worn by the lady carrying the handbag.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

i. A handbag fastener comprising a pair of articulated The individual articulated 1' limbs, each of said limbs being provided with a plurality of spaced clips receivable through eyelets in a bag for removably securing interchangeable bags to the handbag fastener, each of said clips being pivotally carried by a depending ear on an associated one of said articulated limbs, interlocking catch means on said clips and said articulated limbs.

A handbag fastener comprising a pair of articulated limbs, each of said limbs being provided with a plurality of spaced clips receivable through eyelets in a bag for removably securing interchangeable bags to thehandbag fastener, each of said clips being pivotally carried by a depending car on an associated one of said articulated lirnbs, interlocking catch meanson said clips and said articulated limbs, springs carried by said articulated limbs adjacent said ears, each spring engaging one of said-clips to selectively urge the same either towards an open position or a closed position, the direction of urging being similar to the position oi said'clip.
