Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. MILLER,
OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2,705, dated July 8, 1842-.
To aIZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MILLER, artist, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented and made and applied to use certain new, useful, and convenient- Improvements in the Mode of Constructing Clasps for Pantaloon-Straps and other Portions of Dress or Clothing, combining facilities for clasping and unclasping, for which I seek Letters Patent of the United States; and I declare that the mode of constructing and attaching the said improvements and of using the same with convenience are fully and substantially set forth and shown in the following description and in the drawings annexed to and making part of this specification, wherein-.-
Figure 1 represents a double clasp, and Fig. 2 a single clasp, as in use. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections of the clasps as if out direct] yin halt across the length.
The same letters and numbers refer to the like parts in all the several figures.
A A are the straps.
dis the loop, and b the hook, of athin metal clasp, of any suitable material, attached to the straps by eyelet-rings 0, serving the purpose of rivets, or by any other convenient mode.
The loop a (see sections Figs.3 and 4) is made with a long slot or opening to receive the hook, and the back lip or edge I of the.
opening is bent down or countersunk below the lip 2, soas to allow the back 3 of the hook b to become in use nearly flush with the metal on the under and back part of the lip 1.
The hook I) is formed with a threefold turn that finishes with the edge of the metal out- Ward by folding the metal so as to place an inside hook within the outer hook, so that the edge of metal forming the termination of the inner hook meets the lip 2 or inner edge of the loop a at such a point as to cause the anywhere or to cause inconvenience under the tread, while by taking the points 4 4:- of the clasp between the finger and thumb a slight compression displaces the hook, so that it slips back through the loop and is immediately unfastened, and on entering the hook again in the loop the extension of the straps immediately hooks the clasp, thus affording an instantaneous, easy, and convenient hookin g or unhooking of the clasp.
In Fig. 1 a mode is shown of readily attaching. or detaching the straps and clasps from garments when the wearer does not wish to use the clasps or when the garment requires washing. B is a double strip, which may be of leather on woolen or other garments not washable or of linen on those that may require washing. The doubled edge of this strip B and'the doubled edge of the strap A are to be notched into each. other like a hingejoint, and a pin (I, made of a strip of whalebone, with a head on one end and a pin through the other, or any'other' similar fit substance, passed through the doubled parts, like the pin of a hinge; or, if one edge of the strip is slightly notched against the leather of the strap, as shown in Fig. 5, the strip will not work out in wearing and can be easily withdrawn, when necessary, and holes in the straps A or B will enable any person to attach them to a garment without any'other help.
\Vhat I claim as new, and of myown invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The forming the loop a of the clasp with the back lip 1 bent or countersunk down to allow the back 3 of the hook b to lie fair, in combination with the mode shown and described of making the hook I) with a threefold turn, as at '3, to fit the loop, whether one or more clasps are used on a strap, such articles being used as attachments for parts of garments, the whole made and operating substantially as described herein.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, in the city of New York, this 25th day of June, 1842, in the presence of two witnesses subscribing hereto.
WM. II. MILLER. [L. 8.]
