INVEN TOR. S YMOUR SCHNEIDER erm/72w United States Patent HAIR LOTION RESERVOIR FOR HAIR COMBS Seymour Schneider, Bronx, N. Y.
Application November 19, 1951, Serial No. 257,077
3 Claims. (Cl. 132-147) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combs.
More specifically, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved comb having an elongated back portion from one side of which a plurality of comb teeth extend and including a reservoir on the back portion for containing a quantity of hair tonic, wave set lotion or other similar liquid used in hair grooming.
Another object of the present invention proposes constructing the comb to be of a size to be conveniently carried in a pocket or pocketbook while away from home so that the contents of the reservoir will be conveniently at hand to permit effective grooming of the hair.
Still further, the present invention proposes constructing the reservoir as a separate container removably mounted on the back portion of the comb in a manner to be quickly and easily separated from the back portion when the contents of the container are to be used for hair grooming purposes.
As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the back portion of the comb with an interior hollow to function as the reservoir and which hollow is arranged to be closed by a screw plug carried by the endmost tooth of the comb.
The present invention further proposes constructing the comb of separate interconnected sections one of which has the reservoir and the other of which has means for closing the reservoir when the sections are joined together.
Still another object of the present invention proposes constructing the comb back portion to include a hollow reservoir having a discharge opening at the top thereof with a manually movable slide for opening and closing the discharge opening.
As a still further object, the present invention proposes constructing the back portion to include a hollow reservoir having a stoppered discharge neck at the one end thereof covered by a pivotally mounted cover member in a manner to retain the stopper from being accidentally knocked out of the discharge neck while the comb is being carried in ones pocket or pocketbook.
It is a further object of the present invention to construct combs of the type disclosed having liquid reservoirs which are simple and durable, which are efiective for their intended purposes and which can be manufactured and ofiered for sale at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
On the accompanying drawings forming a material part of the present invention:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of a comb constructed in accordance with the present invention with a portion thereof broken away to reveal interior construction.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged end elevational view looking from the right side of Fig. 1, but with the cover in its completely closed position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover used.
Figs. 1 to 3 illustrate a comb molded of a synthetic resinous material to include a back portion 90 having integral comb teeth 91 extended from one side thereof.
The interior of the back portion 90 is formed with a hollow 92 which functions as a reservoir to contain the hair tonic, wave set lotion or other hair grooming lotion. At one end, the back portion 90 is undercut and formed with a tubular neck 93 concentric with the hollow and closed by a stopper 94 to prevent spilling of the contents of the hollow 92.
Means is provided for retaining the stopper 94 from being accidentally knocked from the neck 93 while the comb is being carried in ones pocket or pocketbook. The retaining means comprises a hollow cover 95 shaped of metal to have a snug fit over the undercut end of the back portion 90. The tooth 91 at the undercut end of the back portion is considerably wider than any of the other teeth 91, and the cover is formed with arm portions 96 which extend along the opposed faces of the tooth 91. A pivot pin 97 is engaged through the arm portions 96 and the tooth 91 pivotally mounting the cover thereon.
In full lines in Fig. 1, the cover 95 is illustrated in the process of being pivoted away from the end of the comb to expose the neck 93 to have the stopper 94 removed so that the contents of the hollow 92 can be spilled through that neck. The position in which the cover 95 engages over the neck 93 covering the stopper 94 so that it cannot be accidentally knocked from the neck is illustrated by the dot and dash lines 95' on Fig. 1. In its operative position, the cover 95 has a snug frictional fit on the end of the back portion 90 requiring that it be manually pulled old? the end of the back portion to expose the neck 93 together with its stopper 94.
From the foregoing description of the present invention, it will be appreciated that there is proposed a reservoir comb for containing a small quantity of hair grooming liquid. The comb is designed to be carried in ones pocket or pocketbook so that the contained liquid will be available when grooming the hair while away from home. To enable the quantity content of the reservoir of the comb to be quickly determined, it is advantageous to mold the comb of clear synthetic resinous materials; however, the comb may be molded to be translucent or opaque without departing from the scope or intent of the present invention.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1s:
1. A comb comprising a body having an elongated back portion from one side of which a plurality of comb teeth extend, and a reservoir for a liquid on said back portion, said reservoir comprising a hollow formed in said back portion, a tubular neck continuing from one end of said back portion and communicating with said hollow, a stopper closing said neck, and a cover engaged over said neck and stopper retaining said stopper from being accidentally knocked out of said neck, said cover being of hollow construction to have a frictional fit over the said one end of said back portion, the tooth at the said one end of said back portion being wider than the rest, and means pivotally connecting said cover to said wide tooth for pivotal movement relative to the said one end of said back portion.
2. A comb comprising a body having an elongated back portion from one side of which a plurality of comb teeth extend, and a reservoir for a liquid on said back portion, said reservoir comprising a hollow formed in said back portion, a tubular neck continuing from one end of said back portion and communicating with said hollow, a stopper closing said neck, and a cover engaged over said neck and stopper retaining said stopper from being accidentally knocked out of said neck, said cover being of hollow construction to have a frictional fit over the said one end of said back portion, the tooth at the said one end of said back portion being wider than the rest, and means pivotally connecting said cover to said wide tooth for pivotal movement relative to the said one end of said back portion, said pivotal connecting means comprising arms extended from said cover along opposite sides of said wide tooth, and a pivot pin extended through said arms and said wide tooth.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein the cover 2,595,049 includes a wide portion and a narrow arm portion to engage the reservoir and teeth respectively. 650 194 References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 2,465,014 Feiner Mar. 22, 1949 4 Boissoneau et a1 Apr. 29, 1952 FOREIGN PATENTS Great Britain Feb. 14, 1951
