6 Claims. (Cl. 30-43) The present invention relates to a power driven razor with at least one fixed comb-like cutting member and one movable comb-like cutting member reciprocating with respect to the fixed member and arranged outwardly thereof for direct reciprocating engagement with the skin when the razor is in use.
According to one embodiment of the invention as shown herein, four separate cutting elements are united in coacting pairs to form a twin cutting head operating by reciprocating motion.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient arrangement of parts making up the stationary and movable cutting members, respectively, for the razor and whereby said members remain sharp for longer periods of use while eliminating the accidental cutting of facial skin in the use of the razor in a shaving operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a razor of this kind, wherein it is practical to make the stationary cutting member thereof from oppositely facing similar comb-like parts of one cross-sectional shape and provided with teeth free margin thereof to wherever it is practical to make the movable cutting member thereof from oppositely facing similar blade-like parts of another cross-sectional shape and also provided with teeth in its free margin, so correlated with respect to the parts of the stationary cutting member, that when reciprocated longitudinally thereof, with the toothed margins of both members engaged with each other, said members produce the positive whisker cutting action necessary for a smooth, comfortable shave with a power driven razor.
Also it is an object of the invention to provide in a razor of this kind, cooperating fixed and movable cutter members or blades, that may be associated together for use in producing either single or multiple cutting heads for the razor, which may be driven from a single source of power, such as an electric or spring motor arranged in the hand grip portion of the casing or body of the razor as a whole.
Further, it is an object of the invention to provide a cutting head for the razor, that includes stationary and movable cutting members, made up of pairs of preformed sheet metal parts, with the pair of parts for one member being of .similar shape and form and arranged back to back, and with the pair of parts for the other cutting member also being of similar shape and form, different from that of the parts of the first mentioned member, and arranged back to back, portions of the parts of the first mentioned member being formed to receive portions of the parts of the second mentioned member, for assuring a guided straight line relative longitudinal verificating movement between said parts, without play between said members, thereby assuring a smooth whisker-cutting action in the use of the razor.
The above mentioned objects of the invention, as well as others along with the advantages thereof, will more fully appear as the specification proceeds.
Some embodiments of the invention are illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the casing for the razor which, in a manner known per se, contains an electric or spring motor 20 and at the same time serves as a handle for manipulating the razor in a shaving operation.
Of this motor, only the magnets 21, the coil 22 and the rotor 23, rotating about the axis 24 have been diagrammatically indicated in the Figs. 3 and 5. The motor 20 imparts, in a manner known per se, an oscillating motion to two levers 2 by means of an eccentric straddled by the lower bifurcated end of one of the said levers. Each of these operating levers 2 acts on a movable double comb-like cutting member, each indicated as a whole in Fig. 3 by the numeral 3. The outer longitudinal edges of said comb-like member 3 is toothed (see Figs. 1, 8 and 9) and lies resiliently upon a mating toothed margin of a stationary comb-like member 5 of suitable shape. As can be seen from Figs. 3 and 5, each movable comb-like member 3 is supported by means of balls or rollers 6 (Fig. 5). These balls 6 have parts that extend through longitudinal slots 7 in the cylindrical combback 8 and roll on coacting guiding parts of the stationary double cutting comb-like member 5. Each member 3 is constituted by a pair of similar blade-like parts arranged back to back, with their inner portions coacting to form said back 8 and with their outer portions directed outwardly in opposite directions to form the toothed margins before reterred to and shown in Figs. 8 and 9, respectively. The two parts of each movably supported comb-like member 3 are held together in a simple manner, as by pushed-on sockets or caps 9. The operating lever 2 acts on shoulder-like buffers 10 of insulating material, for instance plastics on the back 8. Each fixed stationary comb-like member is constituted by a pair of similar blade-like parts arranged back to back, with their inner portions coacting to form a channel that receives the back 8 of the associated member 3 and with their outer portions directed outwardly in opposite directions to form toothed margins upon which the toothed margins of the blade-like parts of the associated member 3 engage for a coacting cutting engagement therewith. The blade-like parts of said member 5 are held together in pairs by an intermediate carrier 11 which appears in Fig. 3. Each stationary cutting head, as constituted by a pair of two oppositely directed comb-like members 5 may be removed from their grooves in the head end of the casing 1 of the razor together with the associated movable double cutting comb-like member 3 by a longitudinal movement and the said head as a whole is held in the casing head solely by two balls 13 loaded by springs 12 as appears in Fig. 2. These balls project into suitable recesses 14 in one side of each groove of the casing 1. By overcoming the pressure of the springs 12, it is, therefore, possible for the two twin cutting heads to be removed from or inserted endwise into the head end of the casing 1.
Another construction of the movable double cutting comb-like members 3 is shown in Figs. 6 and 7. As can be seen therefrom, the V-shaped .groove formed by the junction of the outwardly directed outer portions of the blade-like members 3 thereof is filled to a greater or less degree by soldering 15a as in Fig. 6, or by solderingin a shaped part 15 of metal as in Fig. 7. In this way, the two blade-like parts of the member 3 can be connected together to form a rigid unit or whole. Two different forms of arrangement for the longitudinal margins of the movable members 3 are illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 in top view and to a larger scale. As can be seen, as illustrated in Fig. 8, simple comb-like slots can be provided, whilst in the case of the modification according to Fig. 9, additional perforations 16 are also provided inwards from the said slots.
Right around the twin cutting heads or members 3 and 5, a roller frame 17 is provided which leaves-the upper part of said heads or members free, and from the inner 3 nds of said frame sp g-lugs (no shown). enter in o. recesses in the head end of the casing 1. In this manner, the roller frame is held upon the head end of the casing 1 and is easily removable for cleaning and replacement. Slip rollers 18 are rotatably supported in opposite sides of said frame 17, two of such'rollers being located in the V-shaped intermediate spaces as constituted by the gaunction parts of the blade elements forming the memers.
Because of the described positive rigid guiding, absolutely parallel to the cutting path, of the movable comblike member 3 in the stationary'comb-like members, a result is obtained whereby the twin cutting head as a whole has a longer life and stands up to the severest requirements, with exceptionally easy running movement and very slight wear in the parts thereof.
Because of the V-shape of the twin cutting head as a whole, the skin cannot be moved along with the moving cutting member 3 in consequence of the very slight contact with it. This action is 'still further increased by the arrangement of the slip rollers 18 in the V-shaped recess between the parts. at the outer end' of the blade members 3. The skin' thus only can come into contact with the shaving teeth of the, member 3, and this ensures an abrsolutely close shave.
By reason of the four separate but coacting cutting parts which have only short angles, andarcs, it is possible to obtain good stability and. as such parts are hardened through and through, they provide-in addition to ease of machining.a mutually absolutely certain fit to each other of the two pairs of cutting members. Also such parts provide a simple and stable cage for the balls 6 and 13. respectively, 'and in the. event of any breakage of a part of each member 3 or 5, the same can easily be. changed for a new one.
The mutual supplementary, absolutefit of the two cutting members or" systems depends especially on the fact that each separate blade of the moving double cutting comb-likennember 3 has its own springjaction. This action, together with the structural stability of the members 3'an d 5, along with, the rigid guided movement the members 3 have in.' the members 5, provides a maximum ofresistance to stresses that; increase with increased cutting requirements in different types of whiskers. In addition, the double cutting combrlike members. 3 moving under tensionrelative to'the coactingpartsS, can by soldering together in, the V-shaped, recess, or by soldering-in of said profiled piece of: metal before mentioned, be made, absolutely rigid, and thereby a. cutting action that does not;yield in any direction, is obtained.
This construction of the twin cutting head, as before described, also. allows. multiple cutter heads to be, arranged alongside each other inthe head of, the razor as aiwhole.

portions, the inner portions. of saidparts being spaced laterally.- from each other tocoact in forming aIholloW- channel engaged in supporting relation withrespect to said'cuttinghead endio fsaidfbody, the outer portions of 'said' blad e parts extending in opposite outward directions fromtthe median line of said stationary member and eachhaving curved surfaces opposed to one another and each provided alongits free margin with-longitudinally spaced comb-like teeth, said movable cutting member comprising a pair of cutting blade parts, each having inner and outer portions, the inner portions of the last mentioned blade parts coacting to form a rigid back disposed in said hollow channel of the stationary cutting member for guided longitudinal movement therein, the outer portions of said last mentioned blade-like parts complementally conforming to and engaging upon the convexed surfaces of the outer portions of the blade parts of the stationary cutting member and provided along its free margin with longitudinally spaced comb-like teeth for cutting cooperation with the teeth of said outer portions of the blade-like parts of the stationary cutting member, and means carried by the casing body of the razor for imparting longitudinal reciprocating movement to said movable cutting member relative to the associated parts of the stationary cutting member.

A power-driven razor as in claim 1, in which the back of the movable cutting member carries means that project from the sides thereof and engage with portions of the hollow channel of the stationary cutting member for antifriction bearing engagement therewith in the relative reciprocation between said stationary and said movable cutting members.

A power-driven razor as in claim 1, inwhich the back of the movable cutting member is of tubular cross section, and balls are disposed in said back with opposite side portions extending through openings in thesides of said back to have antifriction bearing engagement with coacting parts of the channel of the stationary cutting member in the relative reciprocation between said stationary and said movable cutting members.

A power-driven razor as in claim 1, in which the hollow channel of the stationary cutting member fits and is engaged in an associated channel in the cutting head end of the casing body, and; the sides of said channels are provided with spring pressedparts for detachably securing the channel of the stationary cutting member in the channel in the head end of the casing body;
