Washers 53 of leather, ber or other suitable material which a-re of greater diameter than the narrow portions of the apertures 35 of the cutter are positioned between the outer ends `of-the coil springs 52 and thecutterinember to prevent wear upon the cutter memberand to minimize noise and vibration during the operation of the device. -In order to close and substantially seal the ends 'of the head to prevent cut hair from entering the interior of the head, it is preferred to utilize 'ei .ilates drlsee Fig. 6) which rit recesses in fends of the block 2d and which are secured Lthereto by screws or the like 55. These plates have-lateral extensions as kat 55 at their upper ends which'prevent the corners of the face engaging memberfrom scratching the face. From the alcove it is apparent that applicants have aA construction wherein the face engaging member `has hair guiding portions of extreme thinness, which portions are nevertheless of such short length and so reinforced by the iianges 15 andA E that there is no danger roi flexing and no Yneed for additional support. It is also apparent thatjthe face engaging member and cutedges of said shearing assembly being guarded by said ledges.

In an automatic hair shearing unit, a handle member having a supporting end, a shearing assembly superimposed on said supporting end and including a xed outer member and a reciproeally movable inner member, said fixed outer member having a relatively at slotted area, means extending throughV the top of the fixed outer member for removably afxing the shearing assembly in position, and guard ledgeelements apartY from said afxing means rising from said support alongV the end edges of the shearing `assembly throughout the length Yof said end edges and positioned yto protect the latter and said @end edges at Vthe corners ofthe inner and outer members. A hair shearing. apparatus comprising a handle member having a relatively flat end with a pair of relatively Xed guard ledges rising from the narrower sides thereof, a shearing 'assembly comprising relatively movable plates superimposed ov'er said end,` means between said ledges removably afxing said shearing assembly with respect to said handle memben-the end edges of said shearing/assembly being guarded by said ledges.
