My inventionrelatesto a razor, particularly to the type; known as fnechanicallyoperating or electric razors.
One of theprincipal objects of this invention to provide novel shearing members in a razor of this class for quickly cutting or shaving a An important object ,of this invention is to provide a razor of this class having shear memedges or such slot means in association with its shearing means that the hairs of the beard to be shaved may easily enter the various slots of the slot means, even though the razor is quickly drawn over the heard or Another important object of this invention is to provide an outer shear member, for a razor of this class, having substantially interwoven slot means across the face thereof, but in which individual slots are not of great length or do not extend the full distance across the face-of the shear member, thereby permitting the outerface of the member, which is adapted to engage the skin of the shaver, to be ground or made extremely thin, so that the shearing edges of the razor may 'comeas close-as possible to the'skin.
A further'objectof this invention is to provide, in a razor of this class, "novelly constructed and arranged outer and inner shear members in which the inner member is reciprocally mounted within the outer member and held between lateral bearing portions so thatit maybe freelyand resiliently forced into engagement with 'arcuateshearing surface at the inner side of the outer sh'ear member.
A still further important object of this invention is to provide novel rrieans'foroperating the inner shear member with respect to the outer member.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a novel resilient connection between the movable shear member and the means for operating the same, whereby substantially all wear is automatically taken up, thereby increasin the efficiency of the shearing means, and also reducing noise to a minimum.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, I have devised a razor having certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims,refer- 4.:

The shearinghead, asshown, consists of an outer shear member .2 having a base3 atits inner end, an inner shear member] reciprocally mounted within ach'annelwz of the outfer shear member, and a base 5 at the inner end of the inner shear member 4. I
The outer and inner shear membersare held in U form by the bases {and 5, respectively, .at their inner ends, so asto provide necessary rigidity at such inner portions.
The outer shear member is provided with a plurality of spaced narrow slots ,2? which extend inwardly from the opposite sides and beyond the longitudinal median line of the outer shear memher. Thus, the inner portions of the slots .2 overlap each other, as shown in Fig. 3. .Such ,constructionof the outer shear member permits the slots to be extremely close together, but does not materially weaken the structure, so that tile outer wall or face of the ,outer shear member 2 may be ground or otherwise fabricated to; 6X:- treme thinness, in orderto bring theshearing edge of the outer shear member as close to the skin of the shaver as possible.

In order to effect the shearing action between the shearing members, the inner shear member is provided with transverse slots 4 which are preferably narrow and spaced apart substantially the distance of the spacing of the slots 2 The inner shear member 4 is reciprocated longitudinally within the channel 2 by means of an oscillating lever B which is operated by any suitable motor (not shown). Over the outer end of the oscillating lever is mounted a spring 1 which pivotally connects the outer end of the oscillating lever with a transverse recess portion 5 at the undersid of the base 5. This spring forces the outer face of the inner shear member 4 against the inner side or shearing surface 2 of the outer shear member.
The construction of the modified form of the outer shear member, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, differs from the construction of the member 2 in that the narrow slots I2 extend inwardly from only a short distance from the opposite edges of the outer shear member l2. The space intermediate the inner ends of the slots [2 is provided with. further slots in the form of crescents 12. These crescents are arranged in pairs but are spaced apart at their ends, forming substantially circular slots which are separated at their median portions or on diametric lines. These diametric lines are arranged transversely of the longitudinal extent of the outer face of the outer shear member.
' By reason of such arrangement of slots, substantially the whole outer face of the outer shear member is provided with slots into which hairs or whiskers may extend, particularly to receive hairs which may lie at angles other than those extending directly outwardly from the skin.
In this modified form, as in the first described structure, the slots which extend inwardly from the edges are short of the opposite edges, but each structure provides a network of slots or slot means which are so arranged that the outer wall of the outer shear member may be ground extremely thin.
The oscillating member 6 is pivoted at 6 and is provided with a reduced end 6 which extends towards the inner or movable shear member f for reciprocating the same. Over the reduced end 6* is positioned the leaf spring I. It consists of an inner leg I which is threaded over the reduced portion 6 and is seated against a shoulder 6 The outer end of the spring has a turnedback or U-shaped portion 1 with an enlarged inner end which is partially cylindrical in crosssection and forms a roller which extends into the transverse recess 5 The reduced end 6 on the lever extends into the U-shaped portion. The
U-shaped portion is connected with the leg I by means of a loop 1.
By reason of such construction, the enlarged or roller part at the end of the U-shaped portion resiliently seats the end of the oscillating arm in the recess 5, and this enlarged part of the U-shaped portion 7 is resiliently forced into the recess 5 by the loop 1.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, and a certain modification thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the same, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination, and arrangements, substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a razor of the class described, an outer shear member having a longitudinal channel providing an outer shearing wall and opposite side walls, the side walls having inwardly extending beads spaced backwardly from the outer shearing wall, the inner portions of the beads forming bearing portions, an inner shear member reciprocally mounted within the channel and having an outer shearing wall engaging the shearing wall of the first member, and also provided with parallel side walls slidably engaging the bearing portions of said beads, and means for resiliently forcing the shearing surface of the inner member against that of the outer member.
2. In a razor of the class described, an outer shear member having a longitudinal channel providing an outer shearing wall and opposite side walls, each of the opposite side walls having inwardly extending parallel ridges, the inner portions of the ridges forming bearing portions, an inner shear member reciprocally mounted within the channel and having an outer shearing wall engaging the shearing wall of the first member, and also provided with parallel side walls slidably engaging each of the bearing portions, and means for resiliently forcing the shearing surface of the inner member against that of the outer member.
3. In a razor of the class described, an outer shear member having a longitudinal channel providing an outer shearing wall and opposite side walls, an inner shear member reciprocally mounted within the channel and also having an outer shearing wall engaging the shearing wall of the first member, the first member having inwardly extending ridges near the inner end of the inner shear member, the inner portions of the ridges forming bearing portions for the inner ends of the side walls of the inner shear member, and means for resiliently forcing the shearing surface of the inner member against that of the outer member.
4. In a razor of the class described, a stationary shear member on the support, a movable shear member, an oscillating member on the support, said oscillating member having a reduced portion at the free end, and a spring member having a leg threaded over and positioned backwardly from the end of the reduced portion of the oscillating member, and also having a U-shaped leg posi-' tioned at right angles to the first leg and over the end of the reduced portion, the U-shaped leg being connected by a loop with the first leg, the U-shaped leg extending into a recess of the movable shear member.
