This invention relates to a combination bed and davenport arrangement for small rooms and particularly for trailer houses where space area is limited and must be utilized for dual purposes.

It is now customary to use studio couches in trailer houses. Such couches serve the purpose of a bed at night and as a davenport at other times. There are many objections to this type of equipment. Usually the studio couch does not unfold into a full size bed, and in any event does not give the comfort of a standard type bed and mattress. Furthermore, such couches are difiicult to change into a bed, or change back into davenport form. Another objection to the studio couch for small rooms or trailer house is that even when folded into a davenport couch, they occupy at least one-half the floor space of a full sized bed. Therefore, the principal object of my invention is to provide a built-in means for housing all or any part of a full sized bed so that the same may be used without mechanical change as a bed, a davenport, or may be completely removed from the floor space area of a given room in which it is normally present.

More specifically, the object of my invention is to provide a built-in bed housing in which a full size bed may be stored, or partly withdrawn to form a davenport, or substantially completely withdrawn to provide a full size bed.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a built-in davenport and bed assembly that is economical in manufacture, refined in appearance and durable in use.

These and other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my device being used as a davenport.

Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the invention taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and with dotted lines showing how the bed may be completely rolled into its storage compartment.

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bed rolled to a position free of the housing and ready for use as a bed.

Fig. 4 is an end view of theshowing of Fig. 3, and is taken from line 44 of that figure.

Referring to the drawings I have used the numeral 113 to designate a room. In many trailer houses there is a closet area 11 adjacent the room and along the dividing wall of which is a vertical row of drawers 12. I so construct my room and closet except that I provide a communicating opening or bed passageway 13 adjacent the fioor 14 which has one end communicating with the inside bottom of the room 10 and its other end communicating with the inside bottom of the closet 11, shown in Fig. 2. By this construction the passageway 13 is located below the drawers 12, which form the dividing wall between the room 10 and closet 11. The height of the passageway 13 is just above that of a height of an ordinary bed frame and bed 14 provided with caster wheels 15. The width of the passageway 13 is slightly more than the length of the bed 14. By this arrangement the full size bed may be rolled or pulled into the room for sleeping use as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, or it may be rolled or pushed into the passage- 2,694,207 Ice Patented Nov. 16, 1954 Way, under the drawer area so as to extend well within the closet 11, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. In this latter position the bed will beentirely or substantially removed from the room- 10, thereby making the room 10 available for other uses when the bed is not needed. Just above the passageway or opening 13, inside the room 10, and on the dividing Wall I have mounted a cushioned back 16 as shown in Fig. 4. When the bed with this back 16 is desired for use as a davenport with.- in the room 10, the bed is positioned only part way into the passageway with its side portion extending into the room 10 to provide the cushion seat of the davenport, as shown in Fig. 1. Thus by my construction, the invention may be used as a full bed, a davenport, or removed from effective positionin the room 10. When the construction is used as a davenport, it may be desirable to raise the elevation of the side of the bed extending into the room 10 so that the sea of the davenport will extend rearwardly and downwardly. To accomplish this, I install two floor ramps 18 having a wheel receiving depression in their tops as shown in the drawings. When the two side caster wheels are so elevated the seat portion will be properly elevated. Also the caster wheels at the other side of the bed may be smaller, and when the bed is completely rolled out these caster wheels may engage the ramps, thereby making the bed level.

A trap door 19, hinged at its top to the dividing wall and adjacent the closet 11, may be provided to close the passageway 13, as shown in Fig. 2. By this arrangement the door will automatically open or close by engagement with the moving bed, and due to the force of gravity will yieldingly remain in closed position.

Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of my bed and housing means for same without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.

I claim:

1. In combination with a bed of the type designed to have a portion recessed at times in a structure carrying a back secured thereto whereby the unrecessed portion of said bed extends in relation to said back to form a davenport seat and with the back forms a davenport, a first friction reducing means on said recessed portion, a second friction reducing means on said portion that is unrecessed, elevating means positioned to receive and elevate said second friction reducing means when said bed is partially recessed; said elevating means positioned to receive and elevate said first friction reducing means when said bed is unrecessed; said friction reducing means constructed and arranged so that the top of said bed is tipped at an angle to the horizontal when said second friction reducing means is elevated by said elevating means and the top of said bed is horizontal when said first friction reducing means is elevated by said elevating means.

In combination with a bed unit movabiy supported on a surface, a structure resting on said surface and having a bed receiving aperture therein, a couch back rigidly secured to one side of said structure; said structure capable of receiving only a portion of said bed unit and leaving a portion of said bed unit extending from said structure, wheels on the lower side of said bed unit, means for elevating some of said wheels when a portion of said bed unit is received by said structure and for elevating other of said wheels when said bed is outside said structure, and means for securing said bed unit against lateral movement when any of said wheels are elevated.

3. In a new article of manufacture; a housing unit; a couch back secured to said housing unit; a bed frame adapted to having a portion of its bulk in said housing unit and withdrawn therefrom selectively; legs supporting said bed frame; said legs supporting the portion of said bed frame that is housed being shorter than the legs supporting the unhoused portion of said bed frame; elevating means for elevating still further said longer legs when a portion of said bed frame is housed to form a slanting seat for said couch back; and the same elevating means being adapted for elevating said shorter legs to provide a level sleeping surface when said bed frame is entirely withdrawn from said housing.

In a new article of manufacture; a housing unit; a couch back secured to said housing unit; a bed frame adapted to having a portion of its bulk in said housing unit and withdrawn therefrom selectively; means sup porting said bed frame moveably; said means supporting the housed portion of said bed frame at a lower level than the unhoused portion of said bed frame; elevating means for elevating still further the unhoused portion of said bed frame when a portion of said bed frame is in housed position to form a complementary tilted couch seat for said couch back; said elevating means being adapted to also elevate the portion of said bed frame that is supported at a lower level when said bed frame is entirely withdrawn from said housing; whereby said bed frame is a horizontal sleeping surface when it is entirely withdrawn from said housing.
