67 ATTORN EY lNvENToR ALoNzo GGOULD O. mlmhwl Patented June 3,1930 l UNITED simi-lssl ALoNzo c. GOULD, or Evnan'rr, WASHINGTON COMBINATION ED DAVENPORT Application led October 29,1928. Serial-No. 815,814.
This invention relates to improvements in davenports and the like, and has particular reference to devices of that character known as bed davenports; it being the principal object of the invention to provide a comblnation bed and davenport in which that portion nor.
mally serving as the seat is of extra width and may be drawn' out from within the mam frame to an extended position to provide a bed of full width.
It is a further object of the invention toA provide a bed frame of rigid construction that is slidably contained in the mam frame and easily adjustable into and from the latter,
and which provides for the full width bed without the usual unfolding of hinged sections. v.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a davenport'of the above character" wherein ample space is provided within 'the' back portion for the storage of bedding and cushions.
.It is a still further object of theinvention to provide a device `as above stated, that will be attractive in appearance and relatively in# tion; a portion of the end frame being broken,`
awayior the purpose ofbetter illustration.
Figure 2 is a similar view of the device with the seat portion extended to Iform a full width bed.
Figure 3v is a sectionaldetail illustrating the arrangement of` the bed frame within the main frame of the davenport.
Referring more in detail to the drawings` The davenport, as here illustrated, comprises the usual upholstered, wooden frame structure, having opposite end frames orsections 1 and a wooden back portion 2; the
frame being supported by short legs 3 mounti edb casters l4.
A ong the top of the back portion 2, is the usual top or head cushion 5 which curves up-- wardly and forwardly. A back cushion 7 extends the length of the frame and, at its opposite ends, is fixed rigidly to supporting brackets` 8 which are pivotally attached, by bolts or the'like 9, to the inside edges of the top rails 0f the end frames'l so that this cushion may swing'pivotally from the normal position, as shown in Figure 1, to the position as shown in Figure 2. When in its normal position, the upper edge of the back cushion f lits against the forward edge of the head cush.
ion and, when in its other position, the cushv ion extends lsubstantially in avhorizontal po- :sitlon provldl-ng an open compartment 10 just, below the head cushion which is convenient vfor containing the seat cushions which will be removed from the seat when the device is to be used as a bed.
Each of the end brackets 8 which support i the back cushiomwhen viewed in the position as in. Figure 1, comprises an arm 8a which, at its end, receives the pivot bolt 9, upwardly and downwardly extending arms 81 and 8c and a rearwardly directed arm 8. "Slats or the like, 11, extend 'lengthwise of the cushion bet-Ween the brackets for the support of cushioning springs 12 and angle iron. bars 18 and 14 are extended between the ends of the arms 8b and 8d, respectively, and to these bars, the ends of arcuate ribs 15 are attached in close relation to form an enclosure between the slats and ribs for containing'bedding or the like, as is indicated at 16; access to this compartment being provided when the back cushion is in the position of Figure 2.
Contained within the lower portion of the main frame, is a bed frame 2O of` box-like form that is slidably supported at its ends on the base rails, or plates, 21 of the end frames 1. This bed frame is slidably adjustable forwardly or outwardly from the main frame, from a position at which its forward wall 20 is substantially even with the forward edge of the'main frame to a position at some distance forwardly thereof so as to provide a bed bottom of full width. When the bed frame, so as to insure easy movement, without binding, of the bed frame intoA and from the main frame. The bed frame is also provided, toward its outer edge, with legs 25 for the supporting the forward part of the frame when it is in its extended position. These legs are also equipped with rollers, or casters, 26 to provide for easy adjustment. A mat tress 30 is titted within the bed frame 20 and this is preferably supported by the usual cpiled springs 31 which are mounted on cross slats 32 supported by a plurality of flexible straps 33 attached, at their forward ends, to ed frame and extended rearwardly and fixed to thec'ross bar 14 that extends between the arms Si` of the pivoted brackets 8.
Assuming the device to be so constructed, it is apparent that'when it is desired to use the davenport as a bed, the bed frame 20|may be drawn forwardly and this, through the connection of the straps 33 with the supporting brackets 8 for the back cushion 7, will cause the latter to swing rearwardly at its top edge, thereby opening up the compartment 10.
day of August, 1928.
said back cushion frame to be functionally supported thereby when the said frame is in open position and to be carried upwardly t e rewith into said compartment when the frame is swung from horizontal to normal PQSitiona y 2. In a combination bed davenport, a main frame 'structure comprising opposite end sections, a back, a head cushion extending forwardlyfrom the back, a back cushion having supportin brackets at its ends pivotally mountedginf' the end sections of the main frame' so that the back cushion may' swing between normal closed and horizontal open positions, a bed frame having means by which it is slidably adjustable forwardly from the main frame and a flexible bedbottom carried by the frame and attached along its inner edge to the back cushion frame, said back cushion frame being set forwardly within the main frame to provide a com partment back of it and said bed bottom being so attached to the back cushion that the inner edge will be carried upwardly into the compartment therewith when the cushion is swung from horizontal to normal position incident to inward adjustment of the bed v frame.
Signed at Everett, Washington, this 25th ALONZO C. GOULD.
below the head cushion within which the seat Y cushions 36 may be stored. It also gives access to the compartment beneath the back on its pivots to its normal position and in so swinging,'it carries upwardly with it the inner edge of the mattress 30 and the supporting springs therefor, which assumes the upwardly curved position as shown in Fig. `1.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a combination bed daven rt, a main frame structure, a back cushion rame structure disposed within the main frame to pro- Y vide a downwardly opening compartment back of it, and having means at its'ends by which it is pivotall mounted; pivotally mounted in the main rame to swing between normal closed position and horizontal openJ osition, a bed frame having meansby which y 1t is slidably adjustable into and from the main frame below said back cushion frame, and a iiexible bed bottom carried by the bed frame and attached along its inner edge to
