Abstract
A method of installing a bed/settee in a dwelling that comprises two rooms separated by an internal wall 10, includes: providing a bed base 18 and a headboard 11, forming an opening in the wall 10, attaching the headboard 11 to one side of the wall 10 above the opening, providing a wardrobe or cupboard 12 having a chamber 13 at or adjacent its base, positioning the wardrobe or cupboard 12 on the other side of the wall 10 so that the chamber 12 communicates with the opening, and so arranging the bed base 18 that it can be moved substantially horizontally between a position in which it projects substantially wholly from the opening and a position in which a significant part thereof is contained within the chamber 13. When stowed within the chamber, the bed base can be used as a settee. A combination of components for installing the bed/settee is also provided and includes: a bed base, a headboard, and a wardrobe or cupboard with chamber for receiving a substantial part of the bed base. The chamber of the wardrobe or cupboard is preferably accessed from the rear so that from the front the wardrobe/cupboard has a normal appearance.
Description
BED/SETTEES
Field of the invention
This invention relates to bed/settees, i.e. to articles of furniture that can be used either as a bed or as a settee.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved method of installing a bed/settee.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an improved combination of components that can be used to provide a bed/settee.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of installing a bed/settee, which includes providing a bed base and a headboard, forming an opening in a wall of a dwelling, attaching the headboard to one side of the wall above the opening, providing a wardrobe or cupboard having a chamber at or adjacent its base, positioning the wardrobe or cupboard on the other side of the wall so that the chamber communicates with the opening, and so arranging the bed base that it can be moved substantially horizontally between a position in which it projects substantially wholly from the opening and a position in which a significant part thereof is contained within the chamber.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a combination of components that can be used to provide a bed/settee, said components comprising a bed base and a headboard, means for attaching the headboard to one side of a wall in a dwelling in which an opening is formed with the headboard positioned above the opening, a wardrobe or cupboard having a chamber at or adjacent its bottom, means for positioning the wardrobe or cupboard on the other side of the wall so that the chamber communicates with the opening, and means whereby the bed base can be moved substantially horizontally between a position in which it projects substantially wholly from the opening and a position in which a significant part thereof is contained within the chamber.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the bed/settee in a partially retracted position, Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure 1, and the remaining figures illustrate movement of the bed/settee between its fully retracted and its fully withdrawn positions.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The drawings show an internal wall 10 of a dwelling, with an opening formed in the wall 10 just above floor level. A headboard 11 is attached to one side of the wall above the opening and a wardrobe or cupboard 12 is positioned on the other side of the wall 10. At the bottom of the wardrobe or cupboard 12 there is a chamber 13 that communicates with the opening in the wall 10.
The chamber 13 is enclosed, apart from the end thereof that communicates with the opening in the wall 10, and the chamber 13 has a top wall 14, an end wall 15 and a floor 16. The wardrobe or cupboard 12 is preferably formed of a sound-insulating and/or thermally insulating material and has a door 17. The arrangement is such that a person looking at the wardrobe or cupboard 12 from within the room in which it is located will merely see it as a substantially normal piece of furniture and will not appreciate that part of the wardrobe or cupboard 12 serves to receive part of the bed in the adjacent room.
A bed base 18, on which there is a mattress 19, is positioned so that an end thereof can be passed through the opening in the wall into the chamber 13. At this end of the bed base 18, there is a fixed frame member 20 that is slidable over the floor 16 of the chamber 13 and, at the other end of the bed base 18, there is a supporting leg structure 21.
As will be seen from the various figures of the drawings, the bed base 18, together with the mattress 19, is movable between a fully withdrawn position, in which the bedfsettee can be used as a bed, and a fully retracted position, in which the bed/settee can be used as a settee.
The space-saving possibilities are thus significant.
