Description

Dec. 25, 1962 l. MILLER 3,069,698
CONVERTIBLE CHESTERFIELD AND BED UNIT Filed March 14, 1960 INVEN TOR. [sf/2:2 MM! 3,66%,698 CGNVER'IHBLE tIHESIERFIELD AND RED UNET Israel Miller, i /innipeg, Manitoba, Canada, assignor to The Globe Bedding Qompany Limited, Winnipeg, Manitoha, (Zauada Filed Mar. 14, 196i), Ser. No. 14,579 3 Claims. (1. 5--l7) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in convertible bed units.
Present day hotel and motel accommodations are tending towards convertible seating and sleeping units wherein the bed is converted to seating unit during the day time and which is easily converted to a bed unit at night.
Conventional units of this type pivot outwardly from one corner thereof but these are not considered satisfactory due to the excessive clearance required to obtain the necessary pivoting action.
I have overcome these disadvantages by providing a base frame upon which is mounted a bed frame with rollers upon the underside thereof engaging channels in said base frame. In order to convert the unit, the bed frame is merely pulled outwardly so that the front rollers roll on the floor and extend the bed clear of the storage box and upholstery portion. Furthermore, when the bed frame is retracted, i provide means to elevate the front edge thereof in order to make a more comfortable seating unit.
The principal object and essence of my invention is therefore to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is easily convertible from a bed to a seat and vice versa.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which the front edge of the unit is slightly higher than the rear edge thereof when in the seat position, thus adding to the comfort of the device.
Yet another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which includes novel means to support the front corner of the storage box associated with the device, when the bed frame is extended.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which in cludes means to stabilize the side action of the device in order to maintain the alignment of the bed frame with the base frame during the retraction and extension thereof.
A yet further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which, when in the seating position, not only adds to the comfort of the rooms occupant, but also enables the furnishings of the room to be attractive and compatible.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as here inafter more particularly described, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing in which:
The FIGURE is an exploded perspective view of my device.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Proceeding therefor to describe my invention in detail, it will be seen upon reference to the accompanying drawing that it consists of a base frame collectively designated 1 and a bed frame collectively designated 2.
in detail, the base frame 1 consists of a pair of longitudinally extending angle irons 3 and 4 which are secured to three guide channels 5, 6 and 7, thus maintaining the guide channels in spaced and parallel relationship one with the other.
Patented Dec. 25, 1.962
Th b d frame 2, whi h is al o substantially rectangular when viewed in plan, consists of longitudinal angle irons 8 and 9 and transverse members 10 with diagonals 11 being secured by rivets 12 as illustrated, for strength,- ening purposes.
Upon the underside of the transverse members 10 I have provided rollers 13 mounted within brackets 14, there being two rollers upon each of the members lit and these rollers are adapted to engage the guides 5 and 7 so that the bed frame can be moved inwardly or outwardly with respect to the base frame in the direction of the double headed arrow 15.
I have provided means to lock the bed frame in the retracted position against undesirable outward movement, said means taking the form of channel ends 16 secured on the ends of the front longitudinal member 4 of the base frame. These channel ends include the downwardly inclined guides 17 which engage the floor surface and the rearwardly curved flanges 18 which close off the forward ends of the guide channels 5 and 7. The base 19 of the channel ends or portions 16 are situated on a plane slightly higher than the base 2% of the guide channels and when in the retracted position, the front rollers 13 of the bed frame engage within these portions 16 thus elevating the front edge of the bed frame slightly above the rear edge thereof. This assists in a more comfortable seating arrangement when in the retracted position.
It will be appreciated, of course, that a conventional box spring can be secured to the bed frame and a slip cover can be used to cover the box spring and the bedding thereon.
Upwardly extending supports 21 are secured to the rear longitudinal member 3 of the base frame, said support carrying off-standing brackets 22 upon which is secured a storage box 23 adapted to contain pillows and the like and also to add to the attractiveness of the unit when in the retracted position.
When the bed frame is in the retracted position, the corner 24 of the box is supported by the upper surface of the bed. In any event, when the bed frame is retracted, there is little danger of additional strain being placed upon this box unit.
However when the bed frame is extended, I have found that this corner 24 needs additional support as occupants often utilize the box in order to assist themselves in or out of bed.
I have therefor provided means to support the corner of the box when the bed frame is extended.
Within the central channel 6 I have mounted a post 25 pivoted on pin 26 between flanges 27 adjacent the lower end of the post. A spring 23 extends between an anchor point 2% on the base frame and the base of the post 25 (not illustrated) so that normally this spring erects the post in the position shown in the drawing.
The upper end of the post engages theunderside of the bracket 22 thus giving additional support to the corner 24 of the box.
However, when it is desired to retract the bed, a roller 3h mounted upon the underside of longitudinal member 8, engages the post 25 and as the bed frame is retracted, the post is pushed downwardly against tension of spring 2 3 so that it nests within the channel 6.
In operation all that is necessary to extend the bed is to lift the front edge slightly to clear the front rollers out of the portions 16 whereupon they run down the guides 17 and the bed extends readily to the position where the rear rollers engage the curved flanges 18.
When it is necessary to retract the bed, the reverse operation is undertaken, a slight lift being necessary to run the front rollers up the guides 17 and into the channel ends in.
Finally it will be observed that I have provided side apeaeee thrust rollers 31 mounted upon the front longitudinal angle iron 4 of the base frame, these rollers engaging the transverse members 10 of the bed frame and maintaining the alignment of the bed frame with the base frame during the retraction and extending operation.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently Widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
