UNITED STATES CRITTENDEN OREGMILE, OF DELAWARE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF PATENT OFFICE;
TO EDWARDE. NEFF, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR EXHIBIT ING, MEASURING, AND CUTTING WINDOW-SHADES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No; 269,158, dated December 12, 1882,
Application filed May 16, 1882. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.- Be it known that LORITTENDEN ()REGMILE, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Delaware,in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Exhibiting, Measuring, and Cutting Window-Shades, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention has for its object to provide an improved device for exhibiting, measuring, and cutting window-shades, table oil-cloths, &c.,in the simplest and best possible manner; andit consists essentially of an upright case having a series of rollers removably journaled in the side walls thereof andextending from the top to the bottom of the same, the front wall or door of said case being hinged thereto in such a manner as to permit of its being drawn down to form a measuring and cutting table for the rolls of window-shade, oil-cloth, or other like materials, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a.front elevation of my improved device in position for operation; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the cutting and measuring table, and Fig. 4 a detail sectional view thereof.
Similar letters of reference occurring in the several figures indicatecorresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an upright case or receptacle,which may be of any desired height or dimensions, the front of which is provided with an upper lid or door,B,which is hinged at its lower edge to the side walls of the case at such a height that when it is drawn down it will form a table. Beneath this door or lid is arranged a smaller one, B, which is hinged at the bottom of the case A and adapted to be opened and closed simultaneously with theupper one through the medium of a connecting-arm, a, as shown. The upper lid or door, B, is also provided with two hinged legs or supports, b, which are folded down upon the same when the case is closed. A cord, 0, is attached to one side of the said lid B, and, passing upward over a pulley, 01, upon the side of the case, is provided with a weight, 0, to assistin drawing up the lid or table when the case is to be closed. Near the lower inside end of the said lid or table B is hinged a cutting-frame, D, which extends entirely across said lid or table, and which is provided with a central dovetailed slot, e,within which is adapted to move a hand block, f, of a corresponding shape, carrying upon its lower face a cutting-knife, g, which projects through a slot in a metallic plate, It, secured to the bottom of the said cutting-frame, the edge of the knife also projecting down into a slot, 2', in the lid or table beneath the said frame D, as fully shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Upon one or both of the raised sides oredges E of the lid or table B is provided a scale of yards and inches for the rapid measurement of the goods, which are adapted to be drawn from the rollers and over the said lid or table. Within the upright caseor receptacle A is provided a series of rollers, F, arranged one above the other from the bottom to the top of the case, the one ends of said rollers fitting in openings 70 in one side of the case, while the opposite ends rest in hearings or brackets l in the opposite side of said casein such a manner that the rollers may be readily removed or replaced in their bearings, the outer ends of the said rollers being provided with a square shank, m, adapted to receive a wrench or crank, n, to revolve the said rollers for winding up the goods thereon.
The construction of my invention being as described, it will be observed that in the operation of the same the window-shades of different colors or other goods are wound upon the rollers F, and, being arranged in a vertical row, one above the other, are readily adapted for exhibition, the difierent colors or qualities of the goods being observed at a glance. In measuring and cutting the goods the roller containing the material selected is removed from its place and adjusted in the bearings directly above or on a line with the upper surface of the table, and the free end of the material drawn from off the roller and under the cutting-frame D and along the raised edge of the table until the desired quantity is measured off, when the said cutting-frame D is shut down upon the goods and the blocltfdrawn from one side to the other of the frame, which operation cuts the desired quantity from off the roll of material. The goods may then be put up in a package upon the table and delivered to the purchaser. In place, however, of the upright or vertical case, I may use a horizontal one without departing from the spiritof myinvention; butthe former style is deemed much more preferable, as it does not occupy much space and forms a neater article of furniture.
The advantages ofmy invention will be readily seen without a more minute description,inasmuch as it serves to keep the goods in perfeet order at all times, free from dust and rough handling, shows the goods to the best advan-' tage, cuts the ends perfectly square and true and at right angles to the edges of the fabric, and also economizes space, time, and labor.
Having thus described myinvention,what I claim as new and useful is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described device lor exhibiting, measuring, and cutting window-shades, &c., consisting of the upright case A, provided with the rollers F, arranged one above the other,
and with the tables B B, hinged to the front wall of the said case and having a simultaneous'movement through the medium of the arm a, the upper table, B, being providedwith the hinged cutting-frame D, carrying knife g, and arranged at right angles to the sides of said table, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a device for exhibiting, measuring, and cutting window-shades, the table B, provided with the hinged legs b, measuring-scale E,cord 0, weight 0, and the hinged cutting-frame D, arranged at right angles to the sides of the table, and provided with the sliding blockf,carrying the knife g, which moves in the dovetailed slot 0, in combination with the case A, having pulley d and rollers F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GRITTENDEN GREGM ILE.
