HULDER POR EMBROIDERY.
No. 340,265. Patented Apr. Z0, 1886.
NrrED STATES PATENT OFFICEe JONATHAN B. WEsT, OE ROCHESTER, AssieNoE To L. N. AsiEL a eo. AND BERTHOLD GALLAND, ALL OE NEw YORK, N. Y.
HOLDER FOR EMBROIDERY.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,265, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed .Tilly 31, 1884. Serial No 139,305. (No modi-l.)
To @ZZ whom, z't may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN B. WEsT, of
Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Holders for Embroidery, Lace, elle. of which the following is a specification.
Embroidery, edgings, laces, tbc., have been wound upon spools and placed in a cabinet or case to hold the same, as set forth in my ap- 1o plication, Serial No. 109,655, filed October 22, 1883, and the strips of Inaterial have been passed out through openings and beneath guide bars or cleats upon the case, and pins have been provided to catch and hold the end i 5 portions of such strips as they are wound up.
These devices are also set forth in my aforesaid application, but in the saine'the spools were represented with tubular axes, and pins or rods passing through the same. Under some 2o circumstances it yis difficult to withdraw the pins or rods for allowing of the removal of the spools.
My present invention is an improvement upon and modification of the aforesaid device,
whereby the spools will be held in place, but can easily be removed for the introduction of other or full spools. l make use of spools with pivot-pins projecting at their ends, and latches that are pivoted at the back part of the case 3o or cabinet, so that the latches are raised for the insertion or withdrawal of the spools, and are allowed to drop over and hold the pivot-pins in place after the spools have been inserted.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical scction of a cabinet containing three ranges of spools. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at the line :c x. Fig.- 3 is an elevation representing the pulleys and band for rotating the supporting 4o rollers and spools, and Fig. 4t is a detached view of the spool.
rlhe case or cabinet is of suitable size, and may be more or less ornamental in construction. rl`he bottom A, sides B, back D, and top E are permanently connected. If the' cabinet is to hold three ranges of spools, there will be two horizontal cross-pieces, F, formingledges, and the bottom A projects at its front edge to the saine extent as the ledges F, or a ledge, F,
5o is secured to the bottom A, as shown in Fig. l.
There are rollers o g in pairs, each pair being adapted to receive one roller or range of rollers. Three pairs of these rollers are shown, and they have axes that pass into the side pieces, B, ofthe cabinet, and at one end these 55 axes project through and receive the pulleys 71., around which `the endless cord or belt k is passed, as seen in Fig. 3. The vertical part of such cord is in front of the strip t', and passes over the guidepulleys and through holes in 6o the said strip t' to the respective pulleys h, so that the rollers are all revolved in the same direction when the cord is pulled down.
The rollers g support the spools L, the edges of such spools resting upon the rollers; hence when the rollers are rotated the spools may be revolved by the friction-al contact of the rollers, but those spools that are held by the strips of fabric being caught bythe needlepoints o are not moved by the rotation of the 7o rollers g beneath them.
Each spool L is made with circular heads Z, of pasteboard or similar material, fastened to the ends of the axle Z', and this axle should be of wood, and provided at each end with apro jecting pivot-pin, o', of wire, that pass through the pasteboard heads aud enter the axle.
rlhe pivot-pins come end to end where there are two or more spools in a row, and these pins project, and there is sufficient distance between the heads l for the latcharms a n., that project from the back bar, p, which bar extends along the inner surface of the back of the cabinet, and is pivoted, so as to be swung suiciently for raising the latch-arms n out of the wa)T .of the pivot-pins o when the spools are being inserted. It is preferable to support the back bar, p, vby screws e, that pass loosely through A Vholes in such back bar, so that the desired movement can be given to the back bar and the projecting latch-arms. The latch-arm at one end of the back bar projects to the front of the case sufficiently to be used as a leverhandle, r, in raising or lowering the latcharms. Y
rEhe swinging front plates, s, are pivoted near their lower edges, so that they can be closed up into the front part of` the .case or cabinet, or swung down horizontally to open lthe case for the reception or removal of the 10Q spools. These front'plates are not as wide asl l circular heads and projecting pivot-pins, of a the openings in the front; hence there are narrow spaces above the front plates for the strips of fabric to be passed out.
The bars u are provided for the fabric to pass beneath as it is drawn olf, and there are the pins o, to catch the end of the fabric as soon as the same is drawn above the ledge F and falls against such pins; but instead of such bars being in the form of cleats upon the case, as in aforesaid application, each bar extends from end to end of the front plate, and it is supported by the sheet-metal cap-pieces o', that ,are provided at the ends of the front plates, and project therefrom at the places where the bars u are to be received andheld.
Small nails are passed through the cap -pieces to secure them to the ends of the front plates and to secure the bars u in place.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the spools having case to receive the same, rollers to support and revolve such spools, and latches to hold the pivot-pins and spools whilebeing rotated, substantially as set forth.
'2. The cabinet-case having front plates pivoted near their lower edges, -in combination with the pins o, the guide-bars u, and the end plates, c', for supporting the guide-bars u, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the cabinet-case and spools, of the latch-arms n, the back bar, p, and means for supporting the back bar and allowing it and the latch-arms to be moved, substantially as set forth. Signed by me this 17th day of July, A. D.
