ELMIR E. BARTON, OF IVARRENSBURG, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY-CABIN ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,759, dated February '7, 1905,
Application filed September 24, 1903. Serial No. 174,475.
To u/ wim/ft it 71u14/ concern:
Be it known that LFAAIER E. BARTON, a citi- I pieces of the main frame and provided with a zen of the United States, residing at Varrensbu rg, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois.y haveinvented certain new and useful `Improvements in Display-Cabinets; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will l enable others skilled in the art to which it apl pertains to malte and use the same.
This invention relates to an oil-cloth cabinet. The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby several designs and qualities of cloth may be exhibited feeding' from the reel to the take-up roll, a
and permitted of being reeled off for sale.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. Q is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. I is a view of one form of cutter. Fig. 5 is a view of a different Yform of cutter. Fig. 6 is a view of still another forni of cutter.
I In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
A denotes the cabinet` comprising the vertical standards I, connected by the upper cross-piece 2 and the lower cross-piece 3. Journaled between these standards is the reelframe I, consisting of dish-heads 5 and longitudinal strips G, connecting' them. Arranged in the peripheries of these heads are sci-eweyes T to serve as bearings for the reel-spindles S, upon which the oil-cloth or other goods to be exhibited is placed. The axis of the reel-frame is provided with a crank t), by means of which it may be rotated. Any number of these spindles may be mounted upon the reel-frame. As shown, each spindle S has a polygonal ond S/ for engagement by a crank-wrench 9, which is adapted to be inserted through an opening' in one of the standards I for winding the cloth from the original bolt onto the standard.
A take-up roll I() is journaled in the side longitudinal slot II. in which lits a hinged clamping-strip I2. This roll is provided with a crank I3, by means of which it may be rotated.
In the bottom of the cabinet isa sliding leaf or shelf IO, which may be drawn out to support the detached portion of the cloth.
A Iixed bar II is secu red above the take-up roll. A longitudinally-slotted hinged bar I5, which is adapted to be adjusted by suitable linger-pieces I5@ b'ears on said bar II and is locked in position thereon by a fastening IG. The bars II aud I5 form a guide for the cloth brake to normally frictionally engage the movingl cloth and hold the portion thereof on the take-up roll taut to prevent the feed of a surplus quantityof goods after the motion of the take-up roll has been arrested, and a catch for the end of the strip or portion of the cloth which is to be severed from the bolt or roll. The bar I5 further acts as a guide member, on which the cutting device may move ina determined path to sever the goods in a straight line while the goods are held between the same and the bar II, the latter sustaining the goods while the knife is exerting' its cut.
Different forms of cutters are designated Ii', I8. and If), respectively. as shown in Figs. I, 5, and (j. The cutter 1T consists of a headpiece IT and a triangular-shaped cutter-bIade IT", which is adapted to be moved in the slot in the bar I5 to sever the oil-cloth or material. I`he cutter le has a ditlerently-slraped cutterblade, which acts iu the same manner as the cutter-blade ITU. The cutter I9 is provided with rotary cutter-disks, which also work through the longitudinaI slot in the hinged bar I5.
In operation when it is desired to reel off a quantity ofoil-cloth from -any particular reel supported by the reel-frameI the end of the fabric is placed in the longitudinal groove of the take-up roll, and the hinged strip I2 is then closed over the end of the fabric. thus securely clamping it to the roll. The oil-cloth is now reeled olf by rotating the take-up roll, and when the desired amount has been thus one yard, it will be understood that when theA said roll has been once rotated while the cloth is attached thereto a yard of the said cloth will be wound on the said roll, and hence the latter may be used for measuring purposes.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved reel will be readily appreciated without requiring' an extended explanation.
It will be seen that the device is simple, that its construction permits of its manufacture at a small cost, and that it is exceedingly well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed, and it will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim.I and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a display-cabinet, the combination of a frame or casing, a reel therein and provided with a plurality of spindles for supporting bolts or rolls of cloth, a revoluble take-up roll provided with a clamp to engage and hold the free edge of a strip of cloth to be unwound from any one of the bolts or rolls, and a guide for the unwinding cloth arranged between the take-up roll and reel in the path of movement of the unwinding cloth, said guide comprising bars adapted to engage opposite sides of the cloth to operate as a brake thereon to hold the portion of the take-up roll taut, and one of the bars of said guide being provided with a guide-slot whereby a severing device may be moved along the same to sever the gaged and braled end of the strip from the bolt or roll, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
