UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. KNIGHT, OF AUBURN, MAINE.
MEDICINE-INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 268,805, dated December 12, 1882. Application tiled March 15, 1882. (No model.)
Be it known that I, JOHN A. KNIGHT, of
Auburn, in the county of Audroscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medicine Injectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Same letters show like parts.
The object of my invention is to produce a device for placing or throwing dry medicinesas in powdered condition-into the throat and other parts of the body difiicult toreach by other means.
-It consists in the combination ota bulb or air-chamber, made elastic and capable of com pression and expansion, a neck, an enlargement or chamber for the medicine, a valve, and a delivery-tube. The bulb or air-chamber has a valve for the admission of air into it.
The single figure illustrating my invention is a longitudinal sectional view.
a shows the air chamber or bulb. b is its valve, opening inwardly to admit of the ingress of air as the elastic bulb expands after compression and expulsion of the air therein.
0 is a short neck, connecting the bulb with the medicine-chamber b. In this is the valve d, opening in the direction toward the medicine-chamber and closing backwardly toward the bulb or air-chamber, so as to prevent powdered medicines from being carried by air-currents into the air-chamber.
b is the medicine-chamber, which is simply a receptacle for such medicinal compounds as may be used in the injector. From this extends the tube or nozzlef. The nozzlefis to be placed, for example, in the throat near the affected parts. Successive contractions and expansions of the air-chamber will then carry the desired quantity of medicine to the desired place. I The medicine-chamber is replenished by removing either the neck 0 or the nozz lef and supplying the medicine-chamber through these apertures; or the plugp can be used for the purpose, taking it out to supply the medicine-chamber, and restoring it to place after the medicine is put into the chamber.
Any well-known form of valve operating in the manner described can be substituted for the particular structure herein shown at d. The valve 61 is located on the neck a, as shown in the drawing. Both the neck 0 and thetube .90 enter the chamber I).
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the airbulb b, neck a, medicine-chamber I), plug p, valve (1, located on the neck 0, tube or, and nozzle f, the said neck 0 and tube .90 entering the medicine-chain ber b, all as herein set forth. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. KNIGHT.
