GRAVITY-SPRAYER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
Application filed Apr128, 1911,r Serial No. 623,848.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, DE VVANE B. SMITH, of Deerfield, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gravity- Sprayers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon, which form part of this specification. A
The purpose of my present invention is to provide a sprayer of improved construction and increased eliiciency. My improvements obtain greater ease, regularity and certainty of operation, prevent waste of the liquid and prevent the sprayer from becoming clogged with the liquid.
The invention has particular reference to the class known as gravity sprayers, wherein the liquid is fed tothe air blast by its own weight principally instead of being drawn against its weight to the blast by the suction produced by the air blast.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a sprayer embodying my invention and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings in a more particular description the sprayer has an air compression chamber 3 preferably cylindrical in form, in which is located the plunger 4L, operated by the piston-rod 5 extending from the rear end of the chamber and having a handle 6. The front end of the air compression chamber 3 is closed by a head 7 which has one or more perforations forming blast openings 8. Above the front end of the chamber 3, is secured the liquid receptacle 9 from the lower front portion of which small liquid tubes 10 lead downwardly in front of the head 7 to points respectively approximate the blast openings S. The head 7 is further provided with an opening 11 over which is placed a stop valve 12 readily opening when the plunger 4L is drawn back from the head and closing when the plunger is forced forward again. The liquid is put int-o the liquid receptacle 9 through a convenient mouth closed by a screw cap 13.
In operation the liquid, which for this class of sprayer, will usually be a thick liquid, runs slowly down through the liquid tubes 10 at the lower' ends of which it will ing it forward from the sprayer. As the plunger 1 is drawn back for the next stroke, the valve 12 is at once opened by the suction of this backward movement of the plunger and as the opening 11 of this valve 1 2 is larger than the openings 8, enough air is freely admitted through the opening 11 to prevent the suction at the openings 8 from being suflicient to draw into the chamber 3 any of the liquid that is gradually accumulating at the lower ends of the tubes 10 and to prevent such suction drawing the liquid down through the tubes 10 from the ends of which it might drop before the next forward stroke and so be wasted. This plentiful air Supply on the backward stroke of the plunger, allows the backward stroke to be made much quicker and with much less expenditure of force and also allows the sprayer to be used with greater certainty of results and by people who would not be careful enough to make the backward stroke slowly enough were there no relief valve 12.
In providing against the liquid entering the air compression chamber, the difficulty of the liquid corroding or gumming up the chamber or working parts is obviated and this tends to make the sprayer durable and easy of operation and also prevents the liquid Vfrom accumulating in the compression chamber and being thence thrown out in a solid jet resulting in waste of the liquid and damage to the thing or animal being sprayed.
When not in use the sprayer is turned upside down to prevent the liquid escaping. If as is preferable the liquid receptacle 9 is cylindrical a rest 14 may be provided on what is normally its top to prevent the sprayer rolling` over on its side.
It is evident that modifications in and from the construction shown may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a sprayer for thick liquids, of an air compression chamber, a plunger operating therein, blast openings in the head of said chamber, a liquid receptacle above said chamber, tubes leading from said receptacle to points respectively approximate the blast openings and at right angles to the air blasts therefrom and adapted to convey the liquid thereto by 'its Weight and suspendsaid liquid in drops before said blast openings and a check valve in the front end of said chamber adapted to open on the backward movement of the plungerand vadmit air through the hea-d of said chamber Without drawing' said liquid thereinto and to close on the forward movement of the plunger and cause the air expelled through said blast openings to strike said depending drops. l
2. In a sprayer for thick liquids a compression chamber having; in its head blast openingsand a cheek valve, a plunger operatingin said chamber, a liquid receptacle above said chamber, tubes leading from the 'bottom of the said receptacle to points With- Gopies ofv this patent may be obtained for out the head respectively approximate said blast openings and at right angles to the air blasts therefrom and adapted to convey thev liquid thereto by its own weight and suspend said liquid in drops before said blast openings, said check valve being adaptved to open on the backward movement of said plunger and admit air to said chamber without drawingjy said liquid thereinto and to close upon forward movement of said plunger and cause the air expelled through said blast openings to strike said depending drops.
In witness whereof I have alixed my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 22nd day of April, 1911.
