IMPROVEMENT IN TOP-SPINNING TOY PISTOLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 202,742, dated April 23, 1878 application filed April 8, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL MOHR, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Top-Spinniu g Toy Pistols; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention sufliciently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved top-spinning toy pistol. Fig. 2 represents a bottom view of the same, with the cap of the spring-chamber removed; Fig. 3, a front view of the hammer and spring-chamber; Fig. 4, a side view of the top-spinning spring and spindle separate from the frame, and Fig. 5 a plan view of the top.

My invention consists in a toy pistol arranged for cracking a cap and spinning atop; also, in the combination and arrangement of the top-spinning devices and discharging devices, in the manner substantially as hereinafter described.

In the drawings, A denotes the frame, made with stock a and barrel a. B indicates a hollow spindle, provided with a scroll and holding-lug, b, at its lower end, and a rounded top or head, 0, which closes its upper end. Spindle B is arranged through a central opening of the frame A, with its head 0 in position to receive the blow of the hammer D, while its lower scrolled end projects through a notched ring, E, at the lower side of the frame.

A volute spring, F, surrounds the central part of the spindle B, and is contained within the vertical cylindrical chamber A of the frame A. One end of said spring F is attached to the spindle B, while its other end is fastened to the frame A, the spring being the only connection between the frame and spindle, so that said spindle B is free to move up and down, or to revolve to an extent within the limit of the spring F.

The hammer D is pivoted in the frame at d, and is thrown downward by means of the spring G, which spring at its opposite end works the trigger H, the parts being arranged as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 1. The

face of the hammer D is made with a small plate, D, having inward-turned edges t i, forming a holder or receptacle for a paper cap, K.

L indicates the top, which may be an ordinary hollow metal top, having a stem, m, which will pass up into the hollow of the spindle B, and a pin or lug, n, projecting from the side of said stem, to be caught by the lug b of the spindle.

For operation, the spindle or stem of the top L is inserted within the hollow spindle B, the lug n locked against the lug b, and the top turned sufficiently to strain the spring F when the parts are locked against one of the notches on the ring E. The hammer is then drawn back or cooked, and a cap, K, inserted in the receptacle D, where it is retained by the turned edges 2'. On pulling the trigger H, the hammer D is thrown down, striking onto the head a with a force sufficient to explode the cap K, and to press down the spindle B, releasing the lug n from the notch on ring E, and the top is discharged and set spinning by the recoil of the spring F.

The stock a may be ornamented by any suitable design desired.

Having described my improved top-spinning toy pistol, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a toy-pistol frame, of a top-spinning mechanism, arranged to be thrown into action for spinning the top by the stroke of the lock-hammer, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.

2. A toy pistol provided with a top-spinning mechanism and a cap-holding device, arranged for simultaneously cracking a cap and discharging a spinning-top by the action of the hammer or look mechanism released by pulling the trigger, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination, substantially as shown and described, the pistol-frame A, spindle B c, volute spring F, cap-holding hammer D D, lock-spring G, trigger H, and spinning-top L, for the purposes set forth.
