Description
July 27, 1954 L ROSSMAN 2,684,484
ADJUSTABLE HEADGEAR Filed Feb. 12, 1951 BY W /rm/vs y Patented July 27, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a garment having a portion which is adapted to encircle a portion of the anatomy of the wearer, and has for its primary object to enable the anatomy encircling portion of the garment to be readily and quickly adjusted to a proper t.
Another object is to compensate for any tightness of the garment about the portion of the anatomy encircled.
A further and more specific object of the invention is to assure proper t of an article of headwear, such as a cap, about the head of the wearer.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features forming in the anatomy encircling portion of a garment an elongated longitudinal slot which extends through said garment, an elongated toothed rack carried by the garment and extending through the slot, a slide carried by the garment and mounted on the rack for longitudinal movement thereon, and a keeper carried by the slide for engaging the teeth on the rack and holding the slide against longitudinal movement on said rack.
Other features include constructing the rack of a exible material and providing in the portion of the garment which encircles the portion of the anatomy an elastic insert to allow for a moderate degree of extension of the anatomy encircling portion of the garment.
A still further and more specific feature of the invention includes an article of headgear such as a cap carrying in the front thereofan elongated exible rack, said cap having slots in the head encircling portion in spaced relation to opposite ends of the rack, a band slidably mounted in the slots, slides at opposite ends of the band and slidably mounted in the rack and keepers carried by the slides for engaging the teeth of the rack and holding the band in various adjusted positions about the head encircling portion of the article of headgear.
Still other features include an elastic insert in the band between the slots through which the band extends.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of an article of headgear embodying the features of this invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the article of headgear illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially along the line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the inner back portion of the headgear with the sweat band turned down and illustrating the elastic insert in the adjusting band.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the article of headgear designated generally I0 comprises a cap l 2 having a head encircling portion I4 to the lower edge of which is connected in any conventional manner a conventional visor I6. The head encircling portion I4 is provided on its interior with a conventional sweat band adapted to be turned upwardly in a conventional manner and form a cushion which contacts the head of the wearer.
Formed in the crown portion I4 of the headgear IS immediately above the visor I6 is an elongated Slot 2G which extends longitudinally of the crown portion I4 and stitched or otherwise secured to the inner side thereof on opposite sides of the longitudinal slot 20 is a flexible rack Y 22 which has its toothed portion projecting through the slot 20.
Formed in spaced relation to opposite ends of the slot 20 in the head encircling portion i4 of the garment I0 are transversely extending slits 24.
slidably mounted in the slits 24 is an elongated adjusting band 25, to opposite ends of which are attached slides 28 which are slidably mounted on the rack bar 22 for movement adjacent opposite ends thereof. Each slide 28 is provided with a suitable keeper 3B having an actuating lever 32 and a perpendicular tongue 34 which is adapted to be moved by the lever 32 into and out of a position between the teeth of the rack 22.
In the preferred form of the invention the band 26 is provided medially between its ends with an elastic insert 36 which is preferably concealed behind the sweat band I8 at the back of the headgear.
In use, with the parts assembled as illustrated in the drawings, the distance between the ends of the band 26, and consequently the adjustment of the size of the crown portion 24 can be regulated by moving the levers 32 and withdrawing the tongues 34 from engagement with the teeth of the rack 22 so that the slides 28 may be moved toward or away from one another. In this Way, the size of the head band can be regulated and due to the elastic insert 3B in the band 26 the crown portion i4 can be made to bear with varying degrees of pressure on the portion of the head encircled.
It is to be particularly noted that the features of the present invention are such as to constitute I8 which is a .self-trim feature owing to the neatness and ornamental character of the same.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred form of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a headgear, including a crown, a visor and a sweatband secured respectively to the lower and inner sides of the edge portion of the crown, said crown having its front lower edge portion provided with an elongated slot extending above and parallel to the connection of the inner edge of the visor with the front edge portion of the crown and a vertical slot spaced a substantial distance from each of the ends of the elongated slot, an elongated flexiblel rack member mounted on the inner side of the said edge portion between it and the sweatband and having its toothed portion projecting through the elongated slot, a head engaging band encircling the inner side of the rear lower edge portion of the crown between it and the sweatband and` having its ends extending outwardly and forwardly through the vertical slots, the said ends of the band being spaced apart and terminating adjacent the compiemental ends of said rack member, slide elements carried at the ends of the head band and mounted on the said toothed portion for movement relative thereto, and keepers carried by the slide elements and selectively engageable with the rack teeth to adjust the edge portion of said crown and the sweatband for proper t about the head of the wearer.
2. The invention as defined in claim 1, with an elastic insert disposed medially of the ends of the head band and said keepers being in the form of levers pvotally mounted on the slide elements and having angled tongues for holding engagement with the rack teeth.
