Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELI MANROSS, OE BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,774, dated January 10, 1860.
T o all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI MANRoss, of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Imi proved Latch for Doors and Gates; and I also hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, rei erence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which* Figure l is a perspective View of the latch as applied to a gate; and Fig. 2 a similar view showing in dotted lines the position of the parts when the gate is closed.
A, Figs. l and 2, is a plate of metal firmly secured to the post and having on its outer surface a trough like projection in which is embedded a straight metallic spring B, rest ing upon its ends near the bottom of the trough.
C, is a movable catch or button turning upon the pivot D, and pressing upon the middle of the spring B, within the trough. The angles at the shorter end of the button C, acting upon the spring B cause the button to be retained in the manner of a knife blade in either of the positions C, C Fig. 2.
E F ig. l, is a plate of metal secured to the gate in a position corresponding to that of the latch; and having an opening or slot G through it to admit the button C. At the farther edge of the slot Gr is a hooked projection F which when the gate is closing strikes obliquel'v upon the end of the button C throwing it into the position C Fig. 2, where it enters the slot G. thereby keeping the gate closed. A moderate push or pull upon the gate brings the inner edge of the slot G, against the opposite side of the button throwing it back to the position C, and allowing the gate to open.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture the latch for doors and gates, consisting of a movable catch retained in place by a spring and acted upon by a slotted plate and projection substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
ELI MANROSS.
Titnesses HENRY MANRoss, NEWTON S. MANRoss.
