UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. PARKINSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF FIVE- EIGHTHS TO JOHN B. BERLIN, OF SAME PLACE, AND JOHN S. NICHOLS, OF BRUSHTON STATION, PENNSYLVANIA.
LABEL-HOLDER FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,246, dated November 7, 1882.
' Application filed Ju1y15.1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LTHoMAs J. PARKINSON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders for Cars; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make to and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a part of the side of a f; eight-car, showing my holder with a card in place. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of same.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modification.
My invention has relation to label-holders for freight-cars; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A designates the side of a freight-car to which it is desired to attach the card B. I permanently attach to the side of the car A a fastening-plate, O, in the form of a box, hollow inside to allow of the retraction of a spring, a, which is riveted at b to the plate O. To plate 0, by pin 0, I pivot the lever D, having extension cl, upon which the spring a presses, and thus holds the lever D 0 against the side-of the car. Lever D is provided on its under face with two or more points or prongs, e, which are sharpened sufficiently to penetrate the card B. I prefer to make the lever D in the shape of a cross, hav- 5 ing one of the pointse at each corner.
Thus constructed and attached to the car, the holder is put to use by simply lifting the lever slightly from the car by means of its outwardly-projecting handle f, slipping the card 0 under it, and then letting the spring act to cause lever D to fly home and drive the points 6 through the card and even into the wood of the car. The card thus attached cannot come I oil, and is held securely until the car reaches its destination.' If in winter the card freezes 5 to the car, another card may be placed right on top of it and the spring-holder operated. The points secure the card against dislodgment, no matter how hard may be the shocks and jolts during the journey. By this construction a train of cars may be readily and expeditiously carded, even when moving at a low speed. The customary conductors cards may also be held by the same holder, and removed by the conductor, when necessary, without trouble.
As a modification the box-plate (1, Figs. 1 and 2, may be replaced by the fiat plate O, having theinwardly-extended bearing 9 on the lever D, the car-tim hers A being mortised to suit. (See Fig. 3.)
The exact form of the prongcd lever D d f may be altered to conform to the cards to be held by it.
I do not claim broadly the combination, in a label-holder, of the clamp with points and spring provided with means for grasping and lifting, the same. being already known.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described label-holder for cars, consisting of a fastening-plate, O, adapted for permanent attachment to a car, plate-spring a behind, and protected by said plate O, and lever D, having extension (I for engagement with said spring, two or more points or prongs, e, and a handle, f, out of the plane of the lever, and standing away from the car and adapted to be readily grasped for operation, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. PARKINSON. Witnesses:
JOHN B. BERLIN,
T. J. MQTIGHE.
