To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL BoJKo, a subject of the King of England, residing at Meacham, in the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tools and has special reference to a combined tool peculiarly adapted for use by railroad employees in loading trucks and in ballasting the same.

A first important object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character having a pick and novel construction of pick point.

A second important object of the present invention is to hrovide a device of this character having an improved construction of a pick point.

Vith the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.

In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is shown a tool which is provided with a head 10 having projecting from one side a hammer 11 and being pro vided on its forward face with a curved claw 12 which may be used for extracting spikes and the like. Projecting from the opposite side of the head 10 to the hammer 11 is a fixed pick point 13 which is preferably integral with the head. Adjacent the base of the pick point 13 there is pivoted to the head a movable pick point member 14 which is provided near its point with a notch 15 arranged to receive a lug or projection 16 on the point 13. By this means, when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 4, the device may be used as a short pick as in handling ties and the like and the stresses due to such use will be taken by the lug and notch as well as the pivot 17. In order to hold the parts closed as in Fig. 4: there is provided an L-shaped leaf spring 18 one end of which is fastened to the handle 19 of the tool While the other end is rolled as at 20 to fit a notch 21 on the rear face of the member 14. By this means the spring is kept in position and also forces the parts 14 and 13 together. In order to lengthen the pick and to provide a tamping tool a removable pick point 22 is provided which has at its asc portion a socket 23 fitting the member 1a. Moreover this movable pick point is provided with a notch 24: wherein the lug 16 fits when the movable point is in use and with the notch 25 wherein the lug 20 of the spring fits, this being clearly shown in Fig. 2. Thus when the removable point 22 is in position it is locked to the member 14: by both the lug 16 and the spring 18 and at the same time the spring holds all of the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2.

It will be obvious that the removable point is to be used as in an ordinary pick for tamping the ballast under the rails and along the ties or for drawing out the ballast from beneath the rails. It will also be obvious that the device, when arranged as in.

Fig. 4 may be used for driving spikes, extracting spikes, or handling the ties as is ordinarily done with the sharp pick point of the ordinary spike hammer.

There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
