To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, J AMES R. J ones and JAMES C. GULVER, both citizens of the United States of America, residing at Camden on Gauley, in the county of Webster and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to, tools and aims to provide a tool in which the parts are interchangeable so that a single handle and head may serve for a variety of tool members so as to permit of the replacement of worn or broken tools or the substitution of a different form of tool;
The invention also aims to provide a novel form or interlocking means so as to removably secure various tools upon a single handle, such as pick points, hammer head, adz, etc., the parts interfitting so that a single bolt extending transversely through the joint will hold the parts against relative movement, thereby saving time and labor in replacing the parts and reducing the cost of the tool.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool provided with a joint constructed in accord ance with the present invention, the tool shown being a miners ick;

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the tool head;
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the pick point;
Fig. 5 is an elevation showing a tool in the form of a claw hammer;
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of an ax blade;
Fig. 7 is a similar view of an adz;
Fig. 8 is a like view of a mattock; and
Fig. 9 is an elevation showing the joint used for securing a tool member to a different form of handle.
Referring to the drawings in detail and more especlally to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the tool illustrated comprises a head being provided with a socket 11 for the reception of a suitable handle 12. The head 10 as shown in Fig. 1 has secured to each end thereof a pick point 13, a novel form of joint being provided for remov'ably securing the points to the head.
The joint comprises complemental sections 14, each section including a tongue 15, the thickness of which is substantially that of one-halfof the width of the tool head. Located upon the. outer end of the tongue 15 is an extension 16, whose greatest width is beyond the point of connection 17 with the tongue 15. The extension 16 is herein shown as of circular formation, but it is obvious. that various other forms may be substituted, for example it maybe of angularformation. The extension 16 is of a less width than the end of the tongue 15, so as to provide shoulders 18 at each side thereof, the said extension being adapted to engage the socket 19 provided upon the oppositesection 14, the socket being of the same shape and size as the extension 16 and thereby providing shoulders 20 upon each side of the socket. When the parts are in engaged position the extension 16 will snugly fit within the socket 19, the parts being held against relative longitudinal movement through the engagement of the said extension and socket, while the shoulders 18 and 20 will abut to prevent pivotal movement. The two sections are held securely together through the medium of a fastening device in the form of a bolt 21, which passes through registering openings 22 formed in each of the members 14.
This form of joint provides convenient means for substituting other points when the ones used are broken or require repointing, it being only necessary to remove the bolt 20 when the said point may be readily disengaged from the tool head. It also provides for substituting diflerent tool members from those shown in Fig. 1, permitting of the use of the head for a wide variety of being formed with the section 14 so as to form an interlocking engagement with the tool head 10.
Fig. 9 illustrates a different use of the joint. In this figure the joint is formed upon the end of a handle 28 the said handle being for the purpose of holding the ax blade connected thereto, or any other tool member for the purpose of sharpening the same. with the complemental section 14: so that the engagement'between the handle and ax blade is similar to the engagement between the tool head and the various tool members.
The joint is susceptible of various other uses, but it is believed that those shown and described are suflicient to establish the superiority and usefulness thereof.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is I 1. A tool embodying a separate tool head, separate tool members and aninterlocking joint between said head and members, said joint including complemental engaging sections, each section comprising atongue, an extension provided upon the extremity of said tongue, said extension being of the The handle28 is formed at one end greatest Width at a point beyond its co'IP nection with the tongue for engagement with a socket of the same size and shape upon the opposite engaging section, said extension and socket being of less width than the end of the tongue to provide engaging shoulders at each side thereof and a fastening element secured transversely through the tongues.
2. A joint of the class described embodying complemental engaging sections, each section comprising a tongue, an extension provided upon the extremity of said tongue, said extension being of the greatest width at a point beyond its connection with the tongue for engagement with a socket of the same size and shape upon the opposite engaging section, said extension and socket being of less width than the end of the tongue to provide engaging shoulders at each side thereof and a fastening element secured transversely through the tongues.
