G. BRON K. COMBINATION HAMMER AND HATGHET.
No. 504,908. Patented Sept. 12, 1893.
INVENTOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE.
CASPER BRONK, OF HILLSDALE, NEW'JERSEY.
COMBINATION HAMMER AND HATCHET.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 504,908, dated September 12, 1893.
. Application filed January 21, 1893. Serial No. 459,200. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CASPER BRONK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsdale, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Combination Hammer and Hatchet, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide carpenters, cabinet makers, lathers and others with a tool which does away with the necessity of carrying both a hatchet and also a hammer. This I accomplish by inserting a detachable steel hatchet blade on one side of the head of an ordinary claw hammer as shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a one side elevation of my hammer and hatchet. Fig. 2 is the opposite side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the head of the hammer showing the shortened claw and recess on the side where the hatchet blade is inserted. Fig. 4 is a front view of the hatchet blade.
A represents an ordinary claw hammer head.
B shows one of the claws made shorter-than the other, it being necessary to shorten one claw in order to allow full play for the hatchet blade when in use.
0 represents the hatchet blade which is at tached to the side of the shortened claw B, of the hammer, and is dovetailed. into the side of the head of the hammer from D to E and from D to F. The object of the dovetail is to keep the blade in its place. Two countersunk screws also fasten the blade securely to the head of the hammer, as well as to the shortened claw.
G shows the recess on the side of the hammer head, and along the side of the claw, in which the hatchet blade is inserted. This recess is three-sixteenths of an inch deep. The object of this recess is to have the surface of the hammer perfectly smooth and free from any projection when the hatchet blade is on the hammer.
The hatchet blade 0 is three-sixteenths of an inch in thickness, and five and one-half inches long, but blades of a different size might be used. The blade is fiat on the back, but on the frontside from H to I is a beveled edge.
The advantages of having a claw hammer and hatchet blade combined in the manner described, will result in the saving of both time and trouble, especially to carpenters.
I am aware that prior patents show hatchets having hammer heads, and also hammer heads having scrapers inserted on one side of the head, but so far as I am aware a detachable hatchet blade was never before inserted into the side of a claw hammer head, in the position herein shown and described.
I therefore claim as my invention- The herein described claw hammer having a steel hatchet blade inserted into a recess extending from about the middle of the side of the hammer head, along the side to the point of the shortened claw, the blade being securely fastened by a dovetailed shoulder, and also by two countersunk screws, substantially as described.
CASPER BRONK.
