To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. PRIDE, a
Y citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Waukesha, county of lVaukesha, and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Hovers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a car moving device, that is a device through the medium of which railroad cars may be readily moved by hand.
The object of my invention is the production of a device of the character mentioned, which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lVith these objects in view my invention consists in a car mover characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangements of parts as all will be hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which* Figure 1, is a side elevation of an ordinary railroad car wheel to which is applied a car moving device embodying my invention, Fig. 2, is an enlarged section taken on line -m of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the lower or engaging end of the device, Fig. 4, is a transverse section taken on line g/ g/ of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower or engaging end portion of the lever.
The preferred form of my construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises an angular jaw member consisting of the end portion 1 which is adapted to engage against the tread of an ordinary railroad car wheel 2; the contacting surface of the portion 1 being therefore of a conformation corresponding with the contour of the tread of a conventional car wheel. Formed at the outer extremity of the portion 1 is a hook 3 which is adapted to snugly embrace the edge of the rim of the wheel engaged by the device, the end l of said hook 3 being divergently disposed so as to adapt said hook to embrace or engage wheel rims of varying thicknesses.
The end portion 5 of the jaw member is so disposed relative to the portion 1 that when the latter is in engagement with the tread of a wheel, said portion 5 will project outwardly substantially coplaner with the wheel. Formed upon the opposite edges of the end portion 5 are'engaging flanges 6 which, together with said end portion 5 constitute a socket for slidable engagement by one end of the operating lever 7. Said end of said lever 7 snugly fits between the flanges 6, sliding movement of said lever relative to the jaw member being limited by the transversely extending bolt or pin 8, which is secured in said flanges 6 by the nut 9, said bolt engaging an elongated slide 10 formed in the adjacent portion of said lever. Such sliding movement of the lever 7 permits of the operative end thereof being forced into engagement with the opposite edge of the rim of the wheel engaged by the device, the contacting portion of said lever being provided with an inclined engaging surface 11.7 With this provision it will be observed that by forcing the lever 7 into engagement with one edge of the wheel rim, the hook 3 of the jaw member will be drawn into secure gripping engagement with the opposite edge of the rim. Said lever is preferably formed of'wood and in order to reinforce the engaging end thereof a metallic cap or plate 12 is arranged thereover, the member 12 being secured in position by means of screws 13.
Through the employment of a car mover of the construction setforth a car of any weight may be readily and easily moved, since the secure gripping of the car wheel afforded by a device of the construction described precludes the possibility of the same sliding upon the rim of the wheel during the lifting movement. A mover of the construction as set forth may be readily manipulated and because of its simplicity in construction is not susceptible to readily become inoperative. Furthermore, the same is so designed as to be adapted for engagement of wheels of varying dimensions, this being afforded because of the disposition of the portion 4: of the hook 3 and of the inclined engaging surface 11 of the lever 7.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction as set fort-h, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a car mover, the combination of an angular javv member; and a lever, said jaw member' having one end formed for engage ment with the tread of a Wheel; and a hook portion on said end adapted to embrace one edge of the rim of said Wheel, the opposite end of said jaw member slidably embrac ing one end of said lever, said end of said lever being adapted to engage against the opposite edge ot said wheel rim, the contacting portion of said lever being provided with an inclined engaging surface, substantially as described.
2. In a car mover, the combination of an angular jaw member; and a lever, said jaw member having one end formed for engagement against the tread of a car Wheel; a hooked portion on said end adapted to embrace one edge of the rim of said Wheel, the opposite end of said jaw member slidably embracing one end of said lever; and means connecting said lever and said jaw member permitting of limited relative movement, said end of said lever being adapted to engage against tlie opposite edge of said wheel rim, the contacting portion of said lever being provided with an inclined engaging surface, substantially as described,

In a car mover, the combination of an angular jaw member; and a lever, said jaw member having one end formed for engage` ment against the tread of a car Wheel; a hooked portion on said end of said jaT member being adapted to embrace one edge of the rim of said Wheel, the opposite end ot said jaw member slidably embracing one end of said lever; and a transversely eX- tending pin connecting said. lever and said jaw member permitting ot limited relative movement, said end of said lever being adapted to engage against the opposite edge of said Wheel rim, the contacting portion of said lever being provided With an inclined engaging surface, substantially as described. p
4. In a car mover, the combination of an angular jaw member; and a lever, said jaw member having one end formed for engagement against the tread of a car Wheel; a hooked portion on said end adapted to embrace one edge of the rim of said Wheel, a projecting socket at the opposite end of said jaw member for slidable engagement by said lever; and a transversely extending pin arranged in said socket portion and engaging an elongated slot in said lever so as to permit of limited relative movement, said end of said lever being adapted to engage against the opposite edge of said Wheel rim, the contacting portion of said lever being provided with an inclined engaging surface, substantially as described.
