Description
0. W. VAN AUKER & J., s. GUM. Lever-Power Oar-Mover.
7 No. 226,688. Patented April 20,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. VAN AUKER AND JOSEPH S. GUM, OF FOWLER, INDIANA.
LEVER-POWER CAR-MOVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,688, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed February 10, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHAS. W.VAN AUKER. and J 0s. S. GUM, of Fowler, in the county of Benton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever-Power Gar-Movers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a side view; and Fig. at is a perspective view, illustrating the operation of our invention.
This invention relates to that class of crowbars which are used for moving rolling-stock for short distances upon railroad-tracks; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinaf' ter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the several figures of the drawings corresponding letters of reference indicate like parts.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary crow-bar, consisting of a bit, B, and handle 0. Upon the handle, just above the bit, are formed or secured two strong hooks, D D, of suitable size to grasp the flange of a car-Wheel, one of said hooks being arranged on each side of the handle. E is a bail pivoted upon the sides of bit B below the hooks D D, and provided at its end with ahook, F.
By reference to Fig. 4. of the drawings the operation and advantages of our invention will be readily understood.
The hook F is adjusted upon the car-axle, and one of the hooks D upon the flange of the nearest wheel, when, by bearing down upon the lever or handle 0, the wheel-is revolved and the car moved.
There being two hooks, D D, the device may be put in operation on either side of the car, and the bail and hook E F being pivoted, it may be thrown back upon the handle, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby enabling the device to be used as a pinch-bar.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the lever or handle 0, having bit B and hooks D D, with the pivoted bail E, having hook F, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 1st day of January, 1880.
CHAS. W. VAN AUKER. JOSEPH S. GUM.
Witnesses DANIEL FRASER, P. B. WILLOUGHBY.
