Description

(No Model.)
W. J. CALDWELL.
. GAR STARTER.
No. 299,342. Patented May 27, 1884.
INVENTDR WITNESSES:
ATTORNEY V WVALLER JAMES OALDVVELL, OF RIVES, TENNESSEE.
CAR- STARTE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,34r2, dated May 27, 1884:.
I Application filed March 17, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, WALLER J. CALDWELL, of Rives, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Starters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which-form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a car-starter which, by a simple application of leverage, will enable an operator with the least possible effort to move a car, or train of cars, if need be. This I accomplish by means of an implement having an attaching-hook 'which hooks over the axle, and a lever fulcrumed to the straight end of said attaching-hook, by manipulating which said carstarterclamps the Wheel and moves the car.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my car-starter, showing the manner of its application to a car-wheel; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing more fully the construction of the same.
In the drawings, A represents an attachinghook, the curved end of which is adapted to partially surround the car-axle a, and the straight end 11 of which extends out to about the periphery of the wheel 0.
Fulcrumed to the extremity of the straight end of the hook A is a lever, B, having a long arm, by means of which the apparatus is manipulated, and a short arm, (.7, extending at right angles to said long arm from the pivotal point thereof and in a direction opposite to that of the curved end of hook A. The end of arm 0 is curved inward toward the periph- I cry of the car-wheel, and is provided with a V-cut, which adapts it to straddle the flange, and when the long arm is lifted securely clamps the wheel between its axle and periphery. By continuing to lift the long arm of the lever B, the leverage is sufficient to start the car or number of cars, as the case may be.
In order to enable the end of the lever B to ride the flange of the wheel, I curve both the straight end of hook' A and the end 0 of the lever B laterally, as shown in Fig. 2
If desired, the curved end of arm 0 may be provided with a shoe or foot adapted to bear having a V-cut therein to straddle the flange of said wheel. As this would be simply a modification of the same principle, I do not consider it a departure from the spirit of my invention.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A car-starter consisting of the hook A and lever 13 having a long arm, as shown, and a short arm, 0, extending at right angles therefrom, and having its end curved, as shown.
2. The combination, with the attaching hook A, of the lever B, having a long arm, and having a short arm, 0, extending at right angles therefrom, and having its end provided with a V-cut, whereby it is enabled to straddle the flange of a car-wheel, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
