Another object of the invention is to reduce the wear on the wheels so as to prevent the wheels being flattened and to also reduce the wear on the track due to the application of the brakes in the ordinary manner.
A further object of the invention is to provide supporting members having brake means thereon for engaging with both the wheels and the rail.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of thi character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, eference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 shows one end of a railway car with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one part of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a like view of another part.
In these figures 1 indicates the railway car. 2 the wheels thereof, and 3 one of the track rails. To the under side of the car at any uitable point is secured a semi-circular bracket 4 having a pivot pin 5 midway its ends. 6 represents a second bracket secured to the bottom of the car and this bracket is provided with an arm 7 extending from its lower end upwardly to a point immediately below the bottom of the car where said arm is bent and extends at. an angle, to the semi circular bracket4 to which it is secured at a point adjacent the pin 5. Thus the two brackets are connected together by an elbow shaped member, the point of the elbow resting against the car. The bracket 6 carries a pivot pin 8 to which is pivoted the forked end 9 of the brake control rod 10. At a short distance from the forked end, this rod is provided with an enlarged flattened portion provided with a slot 12 and a transverse opening 13. 14 represents a semi-circular beam having its ends flattened and provided with openings 15 one of which engages the pin 5 and the other i engaged by the pin 16 which secures this end of the beam in the slot 12 by passing through the opening 13 in the rod 10.
The semi-circular beam is provided with a brake block 17 adjacent one end thereof. This brake is of substantially wedge shape and is provided with a curved face 18 so as to conform with the periphery of the inner wheel of the car. This beam also carries the large brake block 19 having a substantially flat inner face 20 to engage the top of the rail. The rod 10 carries the brake block 21 and this block is provided with the curved face 22 which is adapted to engage with the top of the outer wheel.
It will be understood that a structure similar to that above described is located on the other side of the car and the two rods 10 are connected together by a cross bar 23.
l/Vhen the train is moving the rod 10 is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in this position the block 21 is raised oii the outer wheel and the beam 2 is also raised so that the blocks carried thereby are out of contact with the wheel and rail. When the car is to be stopped the rod 10 is lowered this lowering the beam 14 for applying the blocks to the rail and the block 21 is also applied to the outer wheel, thus a firm braking action is applied to both wheel and to the rail.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a. car, of a beam pivoted at one end to the car, brake blocks on said beam, and a brake control rod pivotally connected with the car, means for connecting the said rod to the free end of the beam and a brake block carried by said rod. 7 2.
