Application October 2, 1952, Serial No. 312,712
1 Claim. l
This invention relates to garments and particularly jackets, coats or shirts having patch pockets, and in particular a patch pocket having an opening through the outer wall with an intermediate partition on the inside of the material forming the wall of the pocket forming a small auxiliary pocket, whereby an emblem, article, or other piece of material in the auxiliary pocket is displayed through the opening in the wall of the pocket and is separated from the body portion of the pocket in which a handkerchief or other article may be positioned.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for displaying insignia such as used by servicemen, clubs and other organizations without permanently attaching, such as by stitching the insignia to the garment, thereby making it possible to readily remove the insignia when the garment is changed or when the garment is washed or cleaned.
Various organizations require that emblems or other insignia be attached by stitching to different parts of garments and when the garment is changed or washed or cleaned it is necessary to remove the emblem or other insignia from one garment and attach it to another.- With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a comparatively small auxiliary pocket preferably formed against the inner surface of the outer wall of a pocket whereby an insigne or emblem positioned in the auxiliary pocket may be displayed through an opening in the outer wall of the pocket.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for displaying emblems or other insignia through the Wall of a pocket of a garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide insignia displaying means in a pocket of a garment without interfering with the conventional use of the pocket.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment having insignia or emblem displaying means in a pocket thereof in which the garment is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a piece of material adapted to form the outer wall of a pocket, preferably of the patch pocket type in which a layer of material is stitched to the inner surface of the wall of the pocket forming a comparatively small auxiliary pocket and in which the piece of material forming the wall of the pocket is proytaken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a detail showing an exploded View wherein the insert on which the emblem or insigne is positioned is withdrawn from the auxiliary pocket.
Figure 5 is an elevational view looking toward the inner surface of the outer wall of the pocket and showing the auxiliary pocket stitched to the outer wall of the pocket.
Figure 6 is a detail showing another exploded view wherein an insert in the form of a layerof material is Withdrawn fromv an auxiliary pocket on the inner surface of the outer wall of a pocket.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved display pocket of this invention includes an outer wall I0 having an opening II therein and an inner panel or layer of material I2 positioned on the inner surface of the outer wall.
The outer Wall or panel I0 with the inner panel I2 on the inner surface and with the upper end of the panel I2 open forms a small auxiliary pocket and an emblem, as indicated by the numeral I4 may be inserted in the inner or auxiliary pocket formed by the panel I2 whereby the outer face of the emblem I 4 is displayed through the opening II in the outer wall or panel I0.
It will be understood that the large pocket and also the auxiliary or small pocket may be formed by suitable means however, in the design shown the outer panel or wall I0 is provided with a lining I5 and the side and lower edges of the panel are turned, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 whereby the edges are stitched to a wall I6 of a garment by stitches II. By the same means an inturned edge I8 is provided around the opening II with said inturned edge stitched to the adjoining edge of the lining I5. In this design the side and lower edges. as indicated by the nu meral i9, of the small panel I2 are secured to the lining I5 by stitches 20 whereby in normal use the panel l2 will be pressed snugly against the inner surface of the outer wall of the pocket and the body of the pocket is adapted to be used for a handkerchief or other articles in the usual manner. The thickness of the materials is exaggerated for the purpose of illustration in Fig. 3, however, it willbe understood that the comparatively' thinipanel` lf2 will be nested against the inner' surface of the wall l0 so that it will not interfere with regular use of the pocket.
In the design shown the upper edge of the outer wall I0 of the pocket is also; turnedgin'- wardly providing an inturned strip 2 1 which isI secured to the upper edge of the lining HiA with stitches 22. The panel I2 mayv also; berpnovided` with an inturned upper-edge 23 if desired.
With the parts formed in this manner anv emblem, insignia, or a layer of material of a color different from that of. the garment or outer wall of.' the` pocketmay. be placed in the auxiliary.` pocket whereby it will be displayed through:Y the opening: lil in the outer wall'. I9' and thisv piece ofi material, emblem, or the. like.r maybe withdraw-n andi replaced. or otherwise. changed` as. may beidesired.
It will be understood that modifications, within the-scopeof thev appended claim, may be made inl the-design and arrangement of the. device without departing from the spirit. of the. invention.
Whatis claimed-is;
In combination with'Y a. garment,` avrstrpiece off material'. shaped tofV form the. outer wall of a patch:1 pocket' and@ stitched on the bottom and side-edgesthereoff tothe outer surface vof the garment, a second piece of material substantially coextensive with said rst piece of material stitched to the inner surface of said rst piece of material with the same stitches which secures the rst piece of material to the garment, said second piece of material providing a lining covering the inner surface of the first piece of material, a third piece of material of smaller size than saidA rst, and second pieces of material positioned against the inner surface of said second piece of materialY and stitched to said second piece of material to provide an auxiliary pocket which is positioned approximately at the center oai'T saidrstland second pieces of material, said first.V and* second pieces of material having an opening extending therethrough approximately atzthecenter4 thereot, and said opening being of smaller size than the third piece of material, and said auxiliary pocket being adapted to receive displayy objects positioned therein so that said objects are visiblethrough the opening inthe saidJ rst and second pieces AofV material andi said objects'being larger than'the-opening', but smaller' than' the auxiliary pocket so thatA saidobjects are-maintained in'xed relation to the openings inv said rstY andY second; pieces yof materiaL LOUIS F.'
