CANDLE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 266,463, dated October 24, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES GRAHNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a candle-holder of the kind usually employed for Christmas-trees, the same being provided with a retaining device and a friction device, so that the holder when placed at any desired inclination, will retain its position, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lisa side view of the device mounted on a branch or twig. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

The letter a designates the cup or holder, which retains the candle. The retaining device or hook 1) serves to attach the device to the branch or twig e, anda counter-weight,d, causes the device to assume a perpendicular position. These features of the device are well known, and have been heretofore employed; but a difficulty has been that some unevenness in the branch or twig, or the inclined position of the branch of the twig, ol'ten prevents the holderfrom assuming a truly perpendicular position, as a result of which the candle, when burning, is apt to drip and cause annoyance. To overcome this difficulty I have provided the candle-holder with a friction-spring, c, which presses itself closely against the twig c, Fig. 2. The friction of this device 0 willcause the holder to remain at any angle of inclination in which it may be placed relatively to the twig e, and consequently, no matter what the inclination or unevenness of the twig may be, the holder can be placed in a perpendicular position, and will be retained therein.

The device maybe made of any pleasing design, so as to form a tasty ornament.

That I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
