This invention relates to protective garments for children, and in particular a cuif, the length of which is sufficientto'extendbeyond the elbow of a child wheninstalled-and secured around the wrist;whereby a baby is restricted in the useof his arms so that it is diflicult for the baby to reach parts of his body to prevent scratching thereof and in which it is difficult for the baby to reach his mouth so that itis difiicult to place needles, pins, buttons and the like therein.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a protecting shield for arms of children wherein with the upper end of the shield extended beyond the elbow the use of the arm on which the shield is positioned is limited.
Various protective devices have been provided for preventing a child placing needles, pins and the like in his mouth and other devices have been provided to prevent scratching however, attachments of this type which are generally in the form of a harness interfere with the freedom of the child and are not used universally. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a protective device that is positioned on the arm of the child and although it forms a protective cuff it also limits movement of the arm upon which it is placed so that it accomplishes a double purpose.
The object of the invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a shield or cuif so that when placed on the arm of a child the movement of the arm is restricted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a protective shield or cuff for use on arms of children that may readily be mounted on and secured to the arm of a child without attaching elements extended therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a protective shield or cuff for the arms of children which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a substantially conical shaped shield having a body portion formed of cardboard, plastic, or other suitable material with a band of shirred cotton or the like extended from one end and provided with a ribbon or other tying device and also with a band of shirred cotton or the like mounted on the opposite or larger and whereby the device is not only useful but may be provided with a pleasing and ornamental appearance.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description 1 Claim. (01. 128-133) Cal . taken in connection with the drawings wherein:
stitches l6 and I1.
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the general arrangement and construction of the cuff.
Figure 2 is a detail showing part of a longitudinal sectionthrough the small end of the cuff with the parts shown on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a similar section through the upper part of the cuif and also with the parts shown on an enlarged scale. v
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the protecting cuif of this invention includes a frusto-conical shaped body it having a fabric sleeve H extended from one end with an ornamental shirred sleeve I2 having a finishing bead I3 on the end thereof extended from the sleeve H and also having a shirred sleeve M with a finishing bead l5 around the end thereof carried by the opposite or larger end of the body It.
The body portion Ill of the sleeve or cuff is made of cardboard, fibreboard, plastic or other suitable material and the fabric bands are secured to the ends as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 wherein the sleeve II is attached to the body by With the end of the sleeve I I stitched to the body In at a point spaced from the end of the body the shirred band 12 may be attached to the end of the body with a row of stitches 58 which extend through the edges of a folder over a sheet of material forming the bead It. The end of the band I2 is extended under the upper wall or edge of a flange I9 extended from the bead It. The material from the opposite side of the bead extends below the end of the body It and the material forming the bead is filled with a suitable filling material 29. By this means the shirred band I! is mounted to flare outwardly, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
The extended end of the sleeve H is also folded over and with the under layer 25 of material stitched to the outer layer 22 with rows of stitching 23 and 24 a channel 25 is formed between the inner and outer layers and a ribbon or the tie band 25 is threaded through the channel. By this means the end of the band may be drawn together over the wrist of the child with the ribbon or tape 26, and by this means the device is secured in position on the arm of the child.
The opposite end of the body portion It is similar to that from which the sleeve l extends and with the edge of the shirred band M extended under a section 2! of the bead [5 a flange 28 extended from the opposite side of the bead may be secured to the body or flange 21 by a row of stitching 29. The bead I5 is also provided 3 with filling material 36 and the filling material is retained in position by a web 3 I The body In may be provided with ventilating openings 32 and the outer surface may be coated with paraiiine, wax or other suitable material.
With the parts arranged in this manner the shield or cuff of this invention is positioned on the arm of a child with the ribbon 26 untied and with the shield in position whereby the bead l5 extends beyond the elbow of the child the ribbon or tie 26 is tightened whereby the device is secured in position and the bending movement of the arm is restricted.
It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A cuff for a childs arm for use in selectively limiting bending of the childs arm at the elbow, comprising frusto-conioal shaped body adapted to surround the elbow of the child, an annular resilient sleeve extending from one end of said body and secured thereto, said sieeve including an inner portion and an outer portion defining an .4 annular channel thereb-etween adjacent the free end of said sleeve, a flexible tape extending through said channel, said sleeve having a por tion extending into said body and being secured thereto at points spaced from the ends of the body, a bead including a flexible strip extending around the edge of said body and secured thereto, a resilient padding positioned within said strip, there being a plurality of ventilating openings in said body, a second strip secured over the other edge of said body, a resilient padding positioned within said last named strip, and a web 7 extending over a portion of said padding and secured to the inner surface of said body and to said last named strip.
