GARTER.
Applicationiiiea August 24, 1925; serial Nq. 51,911.
4 VThis invention relatesto garters. A.More
particularly, this invention is directedrto a' improved method of applying a beaded ornainentation or trimming to an extensible body such as a garter. y
Another object of the invention isto pro vide a garter with an ornamental trimming of the character described comprising few and simple parts, which is neat and artistic vin appearance to a high degree, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
i Other objects of this invention will-in part .be obviousand in part `hereinafter pointed out. v
The inventionaccordingly' consists in the featuresfof construction, combinations of elements andarrangement of parts which will be `exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims. s
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative ,embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 111s' a-peispectiveview of a beaded ,garter embodying; the invention;
Fig.2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line2-2in Fig, 1;
Fig. 3 is avfraginentary view of a stretched body portion' of the garter with the beads applied thereto; and
' Fig. l is a perspective view showing one method of .applying the beads. i Referring in detail tothe drawing, 10 denotes a garter embodying the invention having a body portion 10a comprising a back strip 11, an overlying front layer 12, both of which are shirred, an elastic member 13 interposed between the two, and longitudinally extending rows of stitches 14 for securing said strip, layer and member together as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Said strip and layer may be made of ribbons of silk or satin, or of other suitable fabric. and the strip 11 is preferably formed of wider material than the layer 12 so that the edge portion 11a of the strip forms a ruching border for the layer. The body portion 10a of the garter as described above may be hand or machine made in any manner well known in the art.
A dominant feature of the invention is the application of beadedr trimming or ornaments tothe garter. In the form shown in the drawing, suitable beads 15 such as artificial pearls, orf the like, are strung preferably singly on a non-elastic thread or String llb'and with the aid of a needle 17, eachbead is stitched individually to the frontlayer 12 to conform with a desired artistic design D. (See Figs. 1 and 3.)
Olne method of'applying the beads 15 is to stitch all the beads from a single thread 16 to the 'front layer 12 to conform with the design D leaving one of the ends ofthe thread 16 unanclioied, `then to stretch' the body portion latoits practical maximum limit,
next to allowy said body portion if to return to its normal length, and thereafter to permanently anchor the free `end of the thread j to the body portion@ Ihe step of stretching ofthebody portion-before finally anchoring the ythread 4in the method fas .described above is effective *tov provide a little slack thread betweqi each bead afterthe body portion is returned to its retracted position. Thusfthe .extension of the Ibody lportion is in no way interfered `with `by the vunstretchable property of the thread and injury-to the'beaded ornamentation is avoided since thesaid slack eliminates the possi-bility of breakage ofthe 3 thread when the garter is stretched on putting it on or taking off. i
i In Fig-4` 'sushownag second method en i body-ing the invention for applying the'fbeaded ornamentation. Hereeach section of the body portion to which a bead is fastened isy stretched over the operators fingers when stitching the bead .to the front layer of the body portion. Thus a little slack thread is `provided between adjacent beads when the ody portion is inits normally retracted position as in the case described above.
Still another method of providing slack thread between the beads consists of stretching the body portion over a form, stitching the beads in position to the front layer, and then permitting the body portion to return to its normal retracted position, thereby providing a little slack thread between the beads as described above.
After the thread has been permanently attached to the body portion,vthe garter may be finished by securing the ends together in any well known manner.
It will thus be seen that there is provided l a' device in which the several objects Iof this invention are achieved, and which is well lltl claim as new and desire to secure by Let-4 ters Patent l. An article of manufacture comprising a garter' having a body portion formed to include an elasticv member interposed between a shirred backing strip and front layer and a trimming consisting of a thread, and beads strung on the thread, said beads being secured to the front layer, said thread having` a slack portion between adjacent beads to permit unrestricted extension of the body portion.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a garter having a body portion formed with a backing strip, an overlying front layer, both strip and layer being shirred, and an elastic member interposed between said strip and layer, and an ornamented trimming consisting of strung beads individually secured to said layer and slack fasteningmeans for said beads to permit unrestricted extension of the body portion. y
3. In an article of manufacture, an eXtensible body portion having a shirred outer layer, and an ornamental trimming comprising a thread and beads strung on the thread and stitched to said layer, said thread having slack portions between the beads to permit unrestricted extension of the body portion.
4. In an article of manufacture, the combination of an elongated eXtensible body 'por tion having a shirred outer layer of relatively non-elastic material, and a trimming comprising beads strung on a thread and secured toextend along said layer, said thread having a slack .portion between adjacent beads to permit unrestricted longitudinal stretch of said body.
5. In an article of manufacture, the combination of an elongated extensible body portion having a shirred outer layer of relatively non-elastic material, and a trimming comprising beads strung on a thread and secured to extend along said layer, said thread being non-elastic and having slack portions to permit unrestricted longitudinal stretch of said body portion.
6. A garter comprising an elastic webbing of annularform, covering fabric members of annular form attached to said webbing along the longitudinal edges of the latter, said covering members being each of a length exceeding the normal inexpanded length of said webbing and provided with transversely extending folds when said elastic webbing is in its normal inexpanded state, and an endless row of beads fastened by a thread to the outer one of said covering fabric members, said thread being passed alter nately through the last-mentioned covering member and a bead in the series, the'length of each portion of the thread between adjacent bead elements being vlonger than the distance between adjacent bead elements when the garter is in its normal inexpanded State.
7. An article of manufacture comprising a garter having an elongated extensible body portion, a single thread, and beads strung on said thread secured to the body portion, said thread having a slack portion between adjacent beads to permit unrestricted exten sion of the body port-ion.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
CHARLES B. NAMIOT.
