UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED DOUBLEDAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT CIGAR-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,771, dated October 10, 1882.
Application filed Mai-ch17, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom at may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED DOUBLEDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Cigar-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accon'ipanying drawings.
My invention relates to a new and useful intprovement forsmokers use, and it is to be employed in connection with a hat.
It consists in certain novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinatter more fully set forth.
I The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a crosssection in line m 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a face view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates a thin piece of cardboard or other suitable material, elliptical in form; B B, two metallic approximately T- shaped springs having teeth or points I) b on their outer edges, (1, and held in proper position by guides C U passing over their inner portions, a. To the saidinner portions, a, of the springs B B is connected an elastic band or stiap, I, which passes under the inner portion,a, ofsaid springs B B',and also under the guides (J C and over rollers D D in openings a d, and which strap or band I being stretched tightly on the upper side of the card-board A, the tendency is to draw the springs BB toward the outer edges ot'the board A, and which strap or band I, moreover, forms a convenient holder for cigars E or the like by holding them in position between the said band or strap I and the upper side of the board A, as shown in Fig. 1.
On the under side of the cardboard A, on which the springs B B are arranged, I paste an ornamented piece of paper, 0, covering all the parts with the exception of the inner ends, a, of
the springs B B, which ends a. serve as handles or holders for inserting or withdrawing the teeth or points i into or from the sides of the hat H when it is desired to place the device in position in the hat or remove the same therefrom for the purpose of procuring a cigar, or otherwise.
If desired, the rollers may be arranged on the edge of the board, if necessary.
The device is cheap and simple in construc tion, can be easily adapted for ahnostany style or size hat, and affords a safe and convenient place for carrying cigars of any size, and at the same time prevents injuring the wrapper or breaking the cigar, and it also forms an ornamental lining for the upper part of the hat.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hat cigar-h older com posed of card-board or wood A, the springs B B, moving in suitable guides, and an elastic band or strap, as shown, for the purpose specified.
2. The combiuation, with a piece ot'card-board or wood A, provided with openings in which rollers are arranged, of springs B B, having points or teeth on theirouteredges, such springs adapted to move in guides O O, and being connected at their ends a by an elastic band or strap. I, for the purpose specified.
3. 'Ihecombiuation, with card-board or wood A, provided with openings in which rollers are arranged, of springs B B, having points or teeth on their outer edges, such springs adapted to move in guides G 0, being connected at their ends a. by an elastic band or strap, I, and an ornamented piece of material covering the guides U U and partially covering the said springs B B, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
