l Glam- This invention. relates. to a new design in the form of a combination of: a bed and a swing back divan.

Divans oi the type. referred to in thisapniication usualh; have springmeans. suitably secured to or positioned on the divan at the lower portion thereof and relatively stiff, large cushions, or cushion strips are provided in the upper portion of the divan. Separate relatively stiff vertically extending, loose; back cushions may also be provided for the divan to be positioned onthe rear portion thereof. 1

' One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a devicein'the form oi. a divan whi has a. back or bracket so constructed that it can be swung out partly over such divan to.- form a back, or pillow rest, for use and swung back out of the way and in line with the side of the divan, to convert same into a bed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device, in the form of a bed-divan with a swing back that provides for adjustment of the height of such back and means for adjusting the frame of such bed-divan to width of bedding.

Another object of the invention is to provide a bed, or divan, having means for adjusting the seat depth and for supporting bedding or cushions on such bed or divan.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device in the form and style of a bed-divan that has a day extension for positioning over the bed, which extension can be positioned parallel to the wall for the night without moving such beddivan.

Other objects and uses of this invention will become apparent by a reading of the description and a reference to the drawings, in which:

The back support legs I!) each may have vertically extending tubular sections l3 suitably secured thereto, as by welding, and extending upwardly therefrom. A support bracket I4 is carried by each of the vertically extending sections 13 and usually such brackets I4 are of tubular construction and engage telescopically with the vertically extending sections I3. The brackets [4 are shown, as one feature of the invention, as

including vertically extending sections adjacent the sections I3 and with overhanging end sections I5 which have substantially vertically directed upper end portions l6. Suitable back frame means, such as rods l1, extend between the upper end portion I6 of the brackets M to provide back frame support means in the divanbed.

Figs. 1 and 2 best show that the end sections 15 of the brackets M are telescopically adjustable with relation to the fixed portion of the brackets l4 so that the amount of overhang of such and sections I 5 may be varied. Usually 7 the brackets l4 have horizontally extending portions which have a plurality of apertures or holes l8 therein, with the end sections [5 of the brackets having apertures therein so that a suitable lock pin Hi can extend through a desired one of the apertures 18 and the hole in the end section I5 is adapted to be aligned therewith so that the pins Hi can secure the adjustable portions of the brackets I4 together in fixed re- & lationship with desired amounts of overhang of such end sections l of the brackets.

As another feature of the brackets 14, the lower portions of such brackets id have a plurality of apertures 20 therein through which a pin 2| can be inserted. The upper portions of the vertically extending sections 23 of the bed frame usually are provided with pairs of diametrically opposed slots or recesses 22 therein, and the pins 2! protrude from the brackets to engage with such pairs of slots 22 in the frame of the divan-bed. Thus the arcuate positions of the brackets 14 can be adjusted by lifting such brackets and associated frame means vertically up out of engagement between the pins 2i and slots 22, the entire back frame assembly can be pivoted through a desired are, such as 90, so

that the overhanging end sections of the divan-bed frame can be made to extend parallel to the longitudinal axis of the divan-bed frame, or normal to such longitudinal axis, as desired. This change in positioning of the overhanging part of the bed frame would be made, usually, when the divan-bed is being changed from use as a day bed, over for use for sleeping purposes.

The support legs for the diva-n bed have suitable casters 23 provided thereon or carried thereby, While usually the side rails 2 and 3 carry plates 24 at the end thereof. These plates 24 have slots 25 therein for engagement with means for securing desired headboards, footbcards, side rails, or arm supports, etc., to the remainder of the bed frame. 7 The rods 17 may be carried by the brackets M through sleeve supports rotatably positioned on the end portions is of the brackets.

Having described one invention and the manner of its use and operation, we now claim:

A divan comprising frame means including a pair of substantially vertically extending sections, a support bracket pivotally carried by each of said sections and having a vertically extending section and an overhanging end section, back frame means secured to and extending between said overhanging end sections, said overhanging end sections being telescopically adjustable to vary the amount of overhang of said bracket end sections, said bracket vertical sections having a plurality of spaced apertures therein, pin means extending through a selected one of said first mentioned apertures and engaging said sections to retain said brackets at adjusted vertical heights, said first mentioned sections being notched at their upper ends to engage said pin means in any of a plurality of relative pivotal positions of said brackets with relation to said sections and lock said brackets against pivotal movement.
