7 Claims. (Cl. -131) This invention relates to a bed carriage, and more specifically provides a device for supporting the elements of a bed in spaced relation to a supporting surface, thereby facilitating movement of the bed by utilizing caster wheels in order that the bed may be easily moved for cleaning or rearranging the furniture as desired.
An object of this invention is to provide a bed carriage which is simple in construction, easy to use, convenient, universal in its adaptability, adjustable for various sized beds, well adapted for its intended purposes and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of this invention is to provide a bed carriage for supporting the usual box springs or mattresses on a frame having caster wheels and supporting the headboard and footboard in vertically spaced relation from a supporting surface wherein the headboard and footboard will not engage the supporting surface when moving the bed.
A further object of this invention is to provide a bed carriage having side rails and end rails adjustably mount ed in relation to each other and supporting caster wheels positioned on the end rails wherein the side rails may be adjusted for accommodating different sizes of beds and headboards and footboards.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a bed carriage having side rails and end rails with supporting brackets mounted on the end rails and adjustable hook members supported on the supporting brackets for adjustably positioning the usual headboard or footboard wherein the boards will be retained in spaced relation to a supporting surface.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a bed carriage having side rails and end rails with the end rails being adjustable in length for accommodating different sized headboards and footboards and the side rails adjustably mounted on the end rails for accurately positioning the side rails in relation to the end rails for accommodating various sized box springs and mattresses.
These, together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the bed carriage of the present invention supporting the headboard and footboard in spaced relation to the supporting surface;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the supporting bracket for attaching to each end of each of the end rails for supporting the headboard and footboard of the bed;
Figure 3 is a detailed section showing the connection between the supporting bracket and the headboard;
Figure 4 is a top plan section taken substantially along section line 4-4 of Figure 3 showing the details of construction of the supporting bracket, the attachment of the plate member to the supporting bracket and the attachment of the end rails to the side rails;
Figure 5 is a detailed perspective view showing one of the end rails and one of the supporting casters positioned thereon; and
Figure 6 is a detailed section taken substantially along section line 66 of Figure 5 showing the specific construction of the adjustable end rail.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral 10 generally designates the bed carriage of the present invention, including a pair of elongated side rails 12 and a pair of end rails generally indicated by the numeral 14 and including a pair of overlapping members 16 and 18 that are longitudinally adjustable and including a clamp 20 positioned adjacent the outer end of the outer member 18. The bed carriage 10 supports a footboard 22 and a headboard 24 in a manner described hereafter. As specifically illustrated, the headboard 22 is provided with a shelf portion 26 for receiving books, a radio or the like.
Referring now specifically to the detailed figures of the drawings, it will be seen that the side rails 12 are constructed of angle iron members with the angle facing inwardly and upwardly and the end rails 14 are constructed of angle iron members with the angle facing downwardly and inwardly thereby providing a support for the bed springs along the horizontal flanges of the side rails 12 and on the upper surface of the flanges of the end rails 14. The members 16 and 18 forming the end rails 14 are adjustable in relation to each other and the clamp 20 surrounds the outer of the members 18 and includes a screw threaded member 28 for tightening the. clamp 20 thereby securing the members 16 and 18 in adjusted position wherein various Widths of headboards 24 and footboards 22 as well as bed springs may be accommodated. Adjacent the: outer ends of the end rail 14 is provided a right angular member 30 which forms a reinforcement for the remote ends of the end rails 14. Positioned adjacent each end of the end rails 14 and depending therefrom is a bracket 34 for pivotally supporting a caster wheel 36 having a U-shaped frame 38 and the usual vertical pin received in the socket formed in the bracket 34. it will be seen that a caster wheel 36 and a bracket 34 is provided at each end of each end rail 14 thereby providing support for the bed carriage 10 as well as for the footboard 22 and the headboard 24. The upper surface of the angle iron members 16, 18 and 30 are each provided with elongated slots 40 having an enlarged opening 42 adjacent the central portion thereof but spaced nearer the outer ends of the angle iron members. It will be seen that the slot 40 receives a headed rivet 44 rigidly secured to the undersurface of the side rails 12 wherein the side rails 12 may be rigidly and adjustably secured to the end rails 14. It will be seen that each end of each side rail 12 is provided with a pair of headed rivets 44 for reception in the slots 40. The slots 40 permit adjustment of the side rails 12 in relation to the end rails 14 and in relation to the headboard 24 and the footboard 22 thereby providing an accurate positioning of the side rails 12 in relation to the bed springs to be supported thereon.
Secured to the vertical flange at each end of each end rail 14 is an L-shaped bracket 46 having an angulated end portion 48 secured to the vertical flange by suitable fastening means suoh as the rivets 50. The main body of the supporting bracket 46 is parallel to the side rails 12 and projects longitudinally therefrom and terminates in a vertically elongated portion indicated by the numeral 52. A plurality of vertically spaced and vertically aligned apertures 54 are provided in the vertically elongated portion 50 of the supporting brackets 46. A plate 56 having a pair of projecting pins 58 is detachably secured to the supporting brackets 56 by inserting the pins 58 in selective apertures 54. Along one edge of the plate 56 is provided a pair of upwardly opening hook members 60 for reception in a groove 62 having transverse pins 64 therein in the footboard 22 or the headboard 24. It will be seen that the upwardly opening hook members 60 engage under the transverse pins 64 and support the footboand 22 or the headboard 24. Outwardly projecting flanges 66 are provided on the plate 56 for abutting the forward surface of the footboard or headboard thereby orientating the footboard and headboard in relation to the side rails 12 and the end rails 14.
The operation of the device will be readily understood. The side rails 12 and the end nails 14 are assembled by positioning the headed rivets 44 on the side rails 12 in the slots 40 by first positioning the rivets through the enlarged opening 42 and then moving the rivet 44 out of alignment with the opening 42 as desired. It will be seen that this particular arrangement not only affords a rigid structure but also permits lateral adjustment of the side rails 12 for accommodating various sized springs. The length of the end rails 14 is adjustable by manipulating the screw threaded member 28 and moving the angular members 16 and 18 in relation to each other as desired. The adjustment of the end rails 14 permit utilization of the bed carriage 10 with various sized headboards 24 and footboards 22. The hook members 60 are positioned in the slot 62 under the transverse pins 64 thereby supporting the footboard 22 and the headboard 24 on the ends of the end rails 14. It is desirable to support the footboard 22 and the headboard 24 in spaced relation to the supporting surface and this is accomplished by positioning the pin 58 on the plate 56 in selective apertures 54 thereby vertically adjusting the footboard 22 and the headboand 24 in relation to the end rail 14, the caster wheel 36 and the supporting surface such as a floor, or the like. This permits easy movement of the entire bed when it is desired to clean or rearrange the furniture. It will be understood that the various components of this invention may be constructed of readily obtainable and economically feasible materials and the particular construction lends itself to well known manufacturing processes, thereby enhancing the economic feasibility of the device.
It will be understood the present invention may be utilized on all existing type beds regardless of the height from the supporting surface to the springs and rails thereby forming a versatile bed carriage. Further, the brackets 46 extend outwardly from the side rails where in springs and mattresses of greater length than the side rails may be supported. Also, it will be seen that the bed carriage facilitates the handling of the bed by the manufacturer and retailer for reducing breakage and damage when handling and shipping.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A bed carriage comprising a pair of side rails, a pair of end rails, means joining said side rails to the end rails, depending brackets secured to said end rails, a caster wheel secured to the lower end of each of said brackets, and a supporting bracket secured to each end of each end rail for engaging and supporting a headboard and a footboard of a bed, said headboard and footboard terminating above the lower surface of the caster wheels thereby spacing the headboard and footboard above a supporting surface, said supporting brackets being adjustably secured to the headboard and footboard, each of said supporting brackets including an L-shaped memher having one leg secured to the end rail and the other leg projecting beyond the end of the side rail, said projeeting portion terminating in a vertically elongated portion having a plurality of vertically spaced apertures, and a plate having a pair of hook members on one side thereof for engaging vertically spaced pins in a headboard, said plate being adjustably secured to said vertical portion of the L-shaped member thereby adjustably positioning the headboard and footboard.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said hook members open upwardly thereby engaging under the pins for retaining the board in spaced relation to a supporting surface wherein the carriage and boards are moved on said caster wheels.
3. A bracket for securing an end board to a bed carriage comprising an L-shaped member having one leg adapted to be secured to the bed carriage, a second leg projecting from the end of the bed carriage, a plurality of vertically spaced apertures in said projecting leg, a plate having apertures selectively aligned with said spaced apertures, flanges projecting from each side of said plate for engaging the end board, fastening means for securing said plate to said projecting leg, and upwardly opening hook members on said plate for engaging and supporting an end board in spaced relation to a supporting surface.
4. The structure as defined in claim 3 wherein said hook members are vertically spaced and curved for reception in a groove having vertically spaced transverse pins.
5. A bed carriage comprising a pair of side rails, a pair of end rails adjustably secured to the side rails, caster wheels secured to said end rails for supporting said rails in spaced relation to a supporting surface, a supporting bracket secured to each end of each end rail and projecting beyond each end of each side rail, a headboard connected to a pair of said supporting brackets, and a footboard connected to the other pair of said brackets, said headboard and footboard being supported in spaced relation to a supporting surface, said side rails being adjustable in relation to the headboard and footboard for accurate positioning of the side rails, said headboard and footboard being provided with vertically disposed grooves having vertically spaced transverse pins, and each of said supporting brackets being provided with a pair of upwardly opening hook members for engaging said transverse pins.
6. The structures as defined in claim 5 wherein each of said pair of hook members are formed on the edge of a plate, said plates being vertically adjustably attached to the supporting brackets thereby providing a vertical adjustment of the headboard and footboard.
7. A bed carriage for supporting an end board in spaced relation to a supporting surface comprising a generally rectangular frame having generally parallel side and end rails, said side rails being laterally adjustable relative to the end rails, depending brackets mounted on said frame adjacent the corners thereof, a
caster on each depending bracket for movably supporting the frame, a longitudinally extending supporting bracket mounted at each corner of said frame, each supporting bracket having a pair of upwardly opening hooks on the outer edge thereof, said hooks adapted to engage vertically spaced horizontal pins on the end board for supporting the end board in closely spaced relation to a supporting surface.
