Sept. 1, 1953 2,6505363 BRASSIERE WITH BREAST sTRAPs HAVING ADJUSTMENT AT SIDES J. J. LO CASCIO Patented Sept. 1, 1953 BRASSIRE WITH BREAST STRAPS HAVING ADJUSTMENT AT SIDES Jack J. Lo Cascio, Bayonne, N. J., assignor to Even-Pnl Foundations, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application April 2, 1951, Serial N o. 218,775
(Cl. ,Q -42) 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful im- Drovements and structural refinements in brassires, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a brassire having breast pockets equipped with breast supporting straps for the purpose of imparting proper contour and uplift to the breasts, an important feature ofthe invention residing in the provision of means at the opposite sides of the brassire for adjusting the breast supporting straps, so as to vary the degree of uplift which is imparted thereby to the breasts.
Another feature of the invention resides in the specific construction of the breast supporting straps which are elastic to facilitate a certain amount of stretching, but which also include protective means to safeguard against any possibility of pinching the skin when the straps are partly r fully contracted.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its extreme simplicity of construction, in its convenient and expeditious adjustability, in its pleasing appearance, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of the invention in use;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary inside elevational View of the invention per se;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure l; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5 5 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several Views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a brassire which is designated generally by the reference character I0 and embodies in its construction a front portion or section I2 including a pair of breast cups I4 connected together at the center of the front portion by a vertical strip member I6, the outer side edges of the breast cups I4, in turn, being connected by elastic inserts I8 to 2 a pair of side portions or sections 2U which extend around the sides to the back of the brassire and are suitably connected together.
A pair of elastic straps 22 are disposed in lower portions of the respective breast cups I 4 and have inner ends thereof stitched to the vertical strip member IS of the brassire front portion I2, the straps 22 extending downwardly and laterally across the respective breast cups and thel inserts I8 at the inside of the brassire, but outer end portions of the straps 22 project outwardly from the brassire through vertical slots 24 with which the side portions 20 are provided, as shown.
Adjustable fastener means are employed for connecting the outer ends of the straps 22 to the side portions 20, these fastener means preferably being of the type disclosed in Patent No. 2,437,- 765, granted to N. Statham on March 16, 1948. The adjustable slide 2E of the fastener means is provided at the outer end of each strap 22 for sliding movement on the fastener track 28 which is provided on a strip-like base 30 stitched between the inner and outer walls 32, 34, respectively, of the side portions 2'0, as is best shown in Figure 4. The outer walls 34 of the side portions 20 are slotted so as to expose the fastener tracks 28, and it will be apparent from the foregoing that by simply adjusting the position of the fastener slides 2S on the tracks 28, the tension of the straps 22 may be varied accordingly, thereby proportionately increasing cr decreasing the shaping action or uplift imparted by the straps 22 to the breasts. By virtue of the usual configuration of the breast cups I4, the straps 22 actually underlie the breasts so that proper uplifting effect is achieved.
Attention is now particularly directed to the specific construction of the straps 22, each consisting of a stretchable elastic band 36 which is completely enclosed in a stretchable, textile jacket 38. The jacket 38 may either be at tubular in form, or may be in the nature of a strip which is wrapped around the band 316 and has its longitudinal edges stitched together as Well as to the band, as indicated at 40 in Figure 5.
In any event, while the jacket is being applied to the elastic band, the elastic band is fully contracted and the jacket is applied thereto in its fully contracted form, the walls of the jacket being continuously flat. Then, when the strap assembly is stretched, the jacket stretches with the elastic band, while preserving its flat continuity, so that when the strap assembly is ultimately returned to its contracted form, no shirring of the jacket takes place.
The jacket 3B is preferably in the nature of jersey material, or the like, which, while preserving its at form during expansion and stretching, prevents any possibility of pinching of the skin by elastic or shirring action.
It may be noted that while in the instant invention the straps 22v of this specific construction are disclosed in association with a brassire, such straps may also be employed in other similar environments, Wherever an elastic band is used so as to come in contact with the skin,`
It is believed that the advantages and; use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure, and, accordingly; further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
Having described the invention, whatis, claimed@v a-s new is:
A brassire including a front section comprising a pair of breast cups having contiguous inner edges thereof'` secured togetherfby a vertical lineo stitching, a pair of elastic inserts secured to theouter edgesrof the respective breast cups, a pair ofside sectionssecured to the respective inserts. and extending around the sides tothe back of the brassire, frontvedge portions of said rsidecsections beingy provided adjacent their lower edges with a pair of vertical slots, a pair of elas- JACK J.
