Our invention relates to a new design and improvement in an article of furniture particularly in reference to bed frames, or structure.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device in the form of a central supporting unit for springs or mattresses or both.
Another object is to provide a device which will afiord a means for expanding a complete metal bed frame to a desired width greater than the width in ordinary usage and at the same time provide a center support for springs, or mattresses or both, in such expanded form.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device comprising two side rails of angle or conventional bed frame form, arranged parallel and attached integral at each end on and to a cross rail member extending outward from both sides of such rails and at right angles to the rails to form a unit, supported on legs, provided with wheel casters, for the purpose as later described.
Other objects and uses of the invention .will readily be observed by a reading of the description and referring to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device of the invention as incorporated in an expanded bed frame, showing such frame with a spring and a mattress supported on one part of the bed frame.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device of the invention fixed securely to sections of cross rail members supported on legs provided with wheel casters.
Referring to the drawings: A refers to the invention or device, having two side rails l and 2,
securely attached at their ends to cross rail sections 3, 4, 5, and 6, respectively, to form a central supporting unit for springs, or mattresses or both. 1 refers to clamps for attaching cross rails, such as, 4A and 6A, securely to the cross rails 4 and 6, and also to the cross rails 3 and 5 and pro vide adjustment of the combined length of such rails to provide that the desired width of the assembly may correspond with the width of headboard I4. 8 refers to legs provided with wheel casters fixed securely on the cross rails 3 andl and 5 and 6 at the ends of the side rails l and 2. 9 are braces to maintain the rails l and 2 of the central unit in proper position relative to the end rails 3 and 5 and 4 and 6, respectively, extending therefrom, and the outer side rails such as 10,
in proper position relative to the end rails 4A and 6A, respectively. I l and l IA refer to means such as a plate on the side rail I and a bolt, respectively, for attaching side rails to a headboard post as shown. l2 refers to a mattress and [3 to 1 Claim. (01. 5-185) a spring, both shown on a part of the bed frame of the invention.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the device comprises two side bed frame rails fixed on and integral with two partial end rails or cross members, and having supporting legs having wheel casters attached integral at 7 each end. To'either end of the two partial end rails are attached by means of clamps two other partial end rails attached integral to an outside rail supported on legs with wheel casters, which completes the entire frame assembly, as shown in Fig. 1. I
The width of theframe assembly being determined by the width of the desired headboard, the frame assembly is then adjusted in width, for attachment to such headboard, by loosening the clamps (l) which permit the partial end rails to be expanded, or contracted to the desired width and then to hold such end rails securely in such adjusted position by tightening the clamps. The ends of the outside rails l0 are then attached to the headboard as shown in Fig. 1, the entire weight of the frame assembly and bedding thereon being supported on the wheel casters as shown, with the headboard in 'a floating position. In Fig. 1, the one side of the complete frame is shown while a spring and mattress are shown, in position on the other similar side of the assembly.
We have shown our invention, in a desired and useful form and structure, however, various adaptations in use may require modifications in form, or structure, or both without departing from the basic featureor spirit of the invention. I
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: A bedframe comprising a center support unit, including a pair of longitudinally extending angle members each having adjacent dependent-sides, a support member secured to said angle members adjacent each end thereof and aiding in securing them together as a unit, said angle members having flat upper surfaces for engaging and supporting purposes, cross rail means secured to said angle members at'each of the ends thereof and extending normally from the unit formed of said angle members in both directions, the upper surfaces of said cross rails being substantially horizontally aligned with the upper surfaces of said angle members; side rails of right angular shape in section, each having a horizontally directed supporting leg and a limiting leg extending vertically upwardly from the supporting leg at the laterally outer margin thereof; and cross rails secured to and extending from said side rails with upper surfaces substantially aligned with said supporting legs for co-operative support action with said supporting legs, and with said cross rail means of said center support unit and the upper surfaces of said angle members of said center support unit.
