FREDERICK E. HEINIG, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASS IGNOR TO DICK & CRAVESON, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED TOBACCO-MARKING STRIP AND TAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,156, dated September 12, 1882.
Application filed June 10, 1682. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. HEINIG, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tag and 'lobac (:0 Strip; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figure-s of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 illustrates one form of my device, showing a plan view of the same stuck upon a plug of tobacco, and also the division and prong slots. Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view of the same, showing the prongs by which the device is stuck upon the plug. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 illustrate other forms of my invention, showing each a different figure.
My invention is a combined tobacco plug and tag strip embracing the following peculiar features: Narrow strips are cut or struck from thin sheets of suitable metal, so that illimitable forms and shapes shall be produced solely by the slits cut into and by the slots cut or struck out of said strips; also, said slits and slots are cut at such regular distances, respectively, apart that one respective series of slits shall have their pointed ends bent into prods or prongs for sticking the strip upon the plug, and the other series of slots shall make suitable designative division-points by which to cut ofi equal cakes from the plug; and, finally,
said division-points are placed at such regular distances apart that the spaces between can be fittingly used for tags, while each uncut space or tag is held upon the plug by its respective pair of prongs, all of which and their purposes are hereinafter more fully described,
and illustrated by theaccompanying drawings, in which the same letters designate identical parts of my device in the different figures, respectively.
The letter A represents the said strip; the letter 0, the said division-slots; the letter d, the said prongs, and the letter B the said tagspaces. The said strips are cut or struck from suitable sheets of metal, ofany desired width, by the same act which cuts the prong-slits and the division-slots, thereby making the said stripsA and the tags B into illimitable shapes and. forms, or as many as there can be devised ways of cutting said slits and slots. The said slits are cut so as to make pointed slivers either in the edges or body of the strip, which, being bent as shown, form the corresponding pairs of prongs, d, between each respective pair or division-slots 0, thereby to keep not only said marking-slots but each respective uncut tag B in place upon the plug P or upon each successively cut off cake of tobacco. The said strips A should be cut sntficiently wide to allow different figures, marks, or 'nomenclatures to be imprinted, stamped, or embossed each upon the natural or colored surface of a series of tags, B, or upon each such tag a different figure, mark, or name.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combined tobacco-marking strip and tag consisting of a thin metallic strip, A, provided with a series of division-slots, c, and of prong-slits d, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified. V
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK E. HEINIG.
