Description

' SHELF-FACING. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 20, I919;
' Patented June 22, 1920.
5 HARDWARE DEFT.
(UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. E. DAVIS, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
snnnrrracme. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE a citizen of the United States, residlng at Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shelf-Facings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a shelf facing adapted'to be produced by suitable wood-working tools, from a,fiatsided blank strip which is oblong in' cross zontal shelf as an ornamental finish theresection, the completed facing being adapted tobe attached to the outer edge ofa horifor, and also adapted to releasably hold a label designating the goods stored on the shelf.
ig. 2 is a section on line '2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fi 3 is an enlarged section of the facing,
' showing the manner of engaging the label i I the same parts in outer .therewith.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to, Fig. 3, showing the label engaged with the facing.
The same reference characters indicate all of the figures. Commencing with a flat-sided wooden strip or blank of indeterminate length, and oblong in cross section, I form in one side of the strip a recess extending from end to end of the strip, defining the outer face 13 of the completed shelf facing, the inner sides of two longitudinal spaced a art parallel beads 14, projectin outwar ly from the face 13, said outer ace and beads extendin from end to endof the strip. The face 13 is narrower than the inner face 15, the latter occupying the so that it is ada ted tobe seated on t e outer edge of a shelf 16. The up er and lower edge faces 17 of the facing orm the outer sides of the'beads 14.
In formiiig the recess, I longitudinally slot the strip to under cut the beads 14 and i form grooves 18 having inner sides which Specification of Letters Patent.

overhang the edge portions of the face '13, said inner and outer sides meeting to form the-bottoms of the grooves.
The inner face 15 of the shelf facing thus formed is seated on the outer edge of the shelf and secured thereto by suitable means, such as glue and brads 19, the width of the inner face 15 being preferably equalto the thickness of the shelf, so that the upper and lower edges of the shelf facing are flush with the upper and lower sides of the shelf.
21 represents a flexible rectangular label, which may be of relativel other suitable material. he label is engageable with the shelf facing by first inserting one edge of the label in one; of the grooves 18, as -shown by Fi 3, and then exerting inward pressure on .t e label to flex the same, and at the same time force its 0pposite edge into the other groove, as shown by Fi 4. The label is flat when engaged with t e facing.
I prefer to recess the outer face 13 by making the same'slightly concave in cross section, as shown b Figs. 2, 8, and 4 so that a crevice 22 is ormed between the ace 13 and the inner side of the label 21, as shown by Fig. 4, said crevice communicating with the space between the beads 14. This crevice enables a knife blade, or other device, inserted in said space, to be inserted stiff paper, or
between the label and the outer face 13, for
. the purpose of removing the label, by exertalso. constitutes a neat-and desirable finish for the shelf. V
I claim:
1.. As an article of manufacture a shelf facing composed of a strip corresponding in width to the thic ess of a shelf, and having a fiat relatively wide inner side face formed to be seated on the outeredge of the shelf, longitudinal parallel beads formed on the outer side of the strip, and extending from end to end of the strlp, and a relatively narrow outer face between said beads, andextending from end to end of the strip, the beads being undercut and intersecting the oppositeedges of said outer face .to'form grooves adaptedto receive the opposite edges of a flexible rectangular one-piece e on ted label, and 'releasably confine the label in a flat form between said beads.
2. As an article of manufacture, a shelf facing composed of a one-piece elongated strip corresponding in width to the thickness of a shelf, and having a fiat relatively wide inner side face formed to be seated on the outer edge of the shelf, longitudinal parallel beads formed on the outer side of the strip, and extending from end to end of the strip, and a relatively narrow outer face between said beads, and extending from end to end of the strip,
cut and intersecting the opposite edges of beads so that, a tool the beads being under-' said outerface to form grooves adapted to receive the opposite edges of a flexible rectangular label, and releasably confine the label in a flat form between said beads, said outer face being recessed to form a removing-tool-receiving crevice between the back of the label and said-outer face, said crevice communicating with the space between the inserted in said space Ina enter said crevice.
n testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
GEORGE H. E. DAVIS.
